NFFC Introduces The Guillotine Leagues In 2019

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Thu Jun 06, 2019 5:34 pm

We are always looking at new ways to entice our players to compete in fantasy football leagues. What started as a unique 14-Team national contest in the NFFC Classic in 2004 has evolved to include Auctions, Cutlines, Best Ball, private high-dollar leagues and more.

Now we're adding one very, very unique contest that hasn't been tried before. This one is called:

The NFFC GUILLOTINE LEAGUES.

Now sit back and relax a bit. This one is VERY interesting and like nothing you've seen before. It's going to take a bit to digest this one. We are going to offer these as one-night drafts and as slow drafts, so take it all in and then let us know what you think.

Here's the concept:
NFFC Guillotine Leagues
Cost:
Private leagues at price points of $200 and $400
Teams: 17 Teams Per League
Players Per Team: 16
Prizes: Pay Top 3, Top Prize of $1,800 in the $200 League and $3,600 in the $400 League

Okay, so here's the basic concept: Every week the lowest scoring team in the league is ELIMINATED from the competition. That's right, after Week 1 the lowest scoring team in the league is eliminated and ALL OF THEIR PLAYERS GO BACK INTO THE FREE AGENT POOL.

That team was chopped in the Guillotine!!

That's right, all 16 players from that lowest scoring team in Week 1 will be placed back into the league's free agent pool and only 16 teams will remain in the competition. In Week 2, the lowest scoring team just for that week will be eliminated and ALL OF THEIR PLAYERS GO BACK INTO THE FREE AGENT POOL. That will leave us with 15 teams and this continues through Week 13 until only four teams are left. Every week is a new week, so total points are NOT accumulated in this contest. Every week is a new week and every week one team is chopped in the guillotine.

The four remaining teams after Week 13 compete in Weeks 14-16 for the prize money. The Championship Round is total points for those three weeks and there are no Free Agent pickups during that time. In the $200 league, First Place earns $1,800, Second Place earns $600 and Third Place earns $350. Just double the prizes for the $400 leagues: $3,600, $1,200, $700.

The drafts will consist of 17 teams and 16 rounds for a total of 272 players (12-team NFFC leagues draft 240 players; 14-team NFFC Classic leagues draft 280 players). NFFC Guillotine leagues will use Third Round Reversal. You can imagine the crazy scenarios on how to handle FAAB in these leagues. You will likely have at least one superstar being added to the FAAB pool every week, but you need to spend that $1,000 in FAAB judiciously because you have (hopefully) 13 weeks of FAAB to balance. You also won't need to back up some positions like Kicker or D or maybe even TE since the free agent pool later in the season will be flush with options. It's going to be a fun, crazy FAAB situation for these leagues.

NFFC scoring will be used for this contest and Starting Lineup is the same as other NFFC contests. It includes:

1 Quarterback
2 Running Backs
3 Wide Receivers
1 Tight End
1 Flex (RB, WR, TE)
1 Kicker
1 Team Defense/Special Teams

Every week is a new week in Guillotine leagues as there is no head-to-head competition and no weekly scoring average. Every team starts a new week with 0 points and just their point total for that week is determined on whether they survive another week or not.

We know this is adding another FAAB league for folks, but we feel like this FAAB league could be so interesting that it will add a fun twist to it. We also know that your drafting schedules will be very tight in August and September, so we'll offer 2-Hour and 4-Hour Guillotine drafts that will start once they fill. We'll add those to Registration shortly and will also come up with some June and July draft dates to see if there's interest. We realize that someone will be eliminated after only one week, so we didn't put the entry fee too high. But we also realize there's a lot of in-season work with these leagues, so we didn't want to put the entry fee too low. You let us know if $200 and $400 entry fees are the right price points. It's 9x for winning your league title, so we think the reward is there. Plus this should be a ton of fun.

Also, we know that 17-team drafts aren't the norm in high-stakes, but remember that top picks will be available to add to your roster every single week. You are building a roster that scores consistently week-in and week-out and doesn't finish last at any time in Weeks 1-13. If you do that, you have a great chance to cash or even win the top league prize. It's a battle of survival in the Guillotine leagues, not finishing with the most total points.

We appreciate your feedback on this contest and we will be working with an industry partner to push the Guillotine concept forward. We are VERY excited about that and look for news on that shortly. This is a concept that Paul Charchian came up with and it was played out on LeagueSafe last year. We all loved the concept when we heard about it and thought there would be a market for it here. We'll find out shortly if we're right.

Here's the link to the Contest and again we look forward to your feedback:

So is this best ball/DC scoring? Or do all 16 players score each week?

No, not best ball. You set a standard 10-player NFFC lineup each week: 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 DST, 1 K, 1 FL

Ok sounds interesting. Are all of the drafts going to be slow or are we going to have to just sit down and draft one?
