Good point Larry as it would be pure torture to be on the outside looking in for over a month of regular season NFL games still going on...

I thought of the 16 teams earlier this week also. 15 weeks head to head, 4 week playoff. I think you will need roster position limits and maybe 2 or three IR/Practice squad players for the playoffs. Maybe you can only add to your roster from IR by dropping someone for the rest of the playoffs. Handcuffs or flyers. 16 teams would be for diehards. But it would be the best in the business. Primetime is probably not as big as Greg and Tom would like for a live draft. 12 teams online is king as I think you have seen with the Online Championship. 16 and 14 team live draft ONLY. Best fantasy players around. Exclusive. I am sure you are getting 14 team online leagues set up for next year after the message board 'nudging" earlier in the year. If you need an idea for the Primetime cut it to 10 leagues and call the WCOFF guys and have them put up 10 leagues and have a combined playoffs for the Uber champion. I am sure people would pay up for that. Just thinking. Got to get another beer.

However, I think I would actually prefer adding 2 weeks to the regular season, because when my team doesn't make the playoffs, weeks 14-16 become pretty irrelevant. The "consolation" playoffs are not very exciting. If you think weeks 14-16 are irrelevant to those out of the playoffs, what do you think an additional 2 regular season weeks would be for those out of contention for the playoffs?

Think there's a quitting problem now? Add two weeks to the regular season and see what weeks 14 and 15 are like next year. Better make them all-play.

Greg, even if you're considering a 19 week schedule, I'd suggest you do the first year at 18 weeks so you can see how it shakes out.

Starting out with the higher number could lead to major complaints if there are teams wrapping up early and shutting down, etc.

For the Classic, I would "split the difference" here.....

Have week one be "all play".

Weeks 2-14 would be H2H, and then have weeks 15-18 be the playoffs.

Gives one extra week of playoffs (makes it Mega Millions instead of Powerball! ), only one week of "All Play" for those against it.

For the Primetime, you would probably have to have 3 weeks of All Play unless you formed 3 divisions and everyone played each team once and everyone in division twice. I personally don't like that, as some teams will have a disadvantage of playing "tougher" teams more than once. Same 4 weeks of playoffs.

I agree for year one that you stop in week 18. There will more than likely be LESS parity in the NFL over a longer season. Having your studs sit during "crunch time" is the worst (as many have referenced to).

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! :D

This is the way I had been thinking when I first heard this, two weeks of all-play for the Classic if we went 19 weeks. Primetime already incorporates All-Play, so one more week of that format wouldn't hurt. But it's early in the thinking. ;)

Well, this is encouraging news, as reported today by the Associated Press:

NEW YORK -- The NFL and the players union made "some progress" during a meeting Monday, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The talks were "encouraging" and centered on the proposed 18-game regular season and limiting offseason workouts, according to the person who requested anonymity because negotiations are ongoing.

The NFL Network first reported the details of Monday's session, which was attended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith.

Both the union and league spokesman Greg Aiello on Wednesday confirmed the meeting, which also involved union president Kevin Mawae, Domonique Foxworth of the Ravens and team presidents Rich McKay of the Falcons, Mike Holmgren of the Browns and Bill Polian of the Colts.

A proposal to extend the regular season by two games and reduce the preseason from four games to two was presented to the union a few weeks ago. The union made a counteroffer in which it asked for more roster spots -- the players want three or four more, the league so far has suggested one -- and fewer offseason workouts. The NFLPA wants those workouts reduced by about one-third from the 14 weeks currently allowed.

Players fear the chance for injuries is too high with so many offseason practices that include contact drills.

The players also want the practice squads retained, which is likely even if the regular season remains at 16 games. As of now, there are eight players on those squads.

NFL owners opted out of the collective bargaining agreement in 2008, and it expires on March 3. Little progress had been made on major issues during negotiations, with the key point the owners' demand that the players' cut of designated revenues be restructured.

Glenn -- If a team is hopelessly out of it by week 13, then you're point is correct. Having two more weeks in the regular season isn't going to matter to them. (In fact, they would probably be happy to have the regular season be over and start the consolation playoffs.)

But after week 13, many teams would still be hanging in with some hope of making the playoffs, and having weeks 14-15 be the regular season would be good for them.

We already have a lot of complaints about people quitting and not setting lineups. Can imagine it being week 15 and you are 6 games out of first. It just seems to me that when people are eliminated that there will be many more players quitting on their teams, starting players on bye, and basically ignoring the waiver wire. It could really get ugly towards the end of the year. Just a concern.

Anybody know when are they talking about starting and ending the season with 20 weeks? It would be very different to head to NYC or Vegas in the middle of August for a draft rather than Labor Day weekend.
