I set scoring rules for 2 local leagues so I often like to discuss ways to improve rules
Here are my thoughts on the NFFC scoring rules:
Have to keep negatives for fumbles and interceptions.
Player A gains 80 yards and loses 2 fumbles
Player B gains 80 yards and loses no fumbles
We need to have a scoring system where in this scenario Player B scores more fantasy pts than Player A.
Lower QB TD passes to 4 or 5. Many teams continue throwing from inside 2 yd line. 4, 5 and 6 passing TD performances are getting more and more common.
In today's NFL, if a D gives up 9 points they have played a great game. Only 4 pts for that ? Also, a D that gives up 45 points gets the same scoring that a D does that gives up 18 points. I would change the D scoring to something like this:
shutout 15 pts
2-7 10 pts
8-12 6 pts
13-17 4 pts
18-22 2 pts
23-27 1 pt
27-37 0 pts
38-47 -1 pts
48+ -2 pts
I know an argument against this is that a D that gives up 27 pts does not deserve 1 pt. But it is only one pt and I believe that a D that gives up 27 should not get the same score as a D that gives up 47.
A safety is a rare and often great defensive play that should be worth more than an INT or fumble recorvery.. Maybe 3 or 4 pts?
If the offense throws INT for TD return or gives up fumble return TD, do not count that againt the D and special team pts against.. No fantasy position should have pts deducted for them when they are not even on the field.
If a player in your line-up scores a TD on special teams, give them 6 pts. I know, the special team gets the 6 now. But, on a TD pass we have no problem giving 6 to QB and WR. On a special team TD why not give 6 to special team and the player that scored? Player that scores is risking injury, losing offensive possession, and making a great play. They deserve something for it!
I would give a small deduction for missed field goals of 40 yards or less.
When a D has a lot of 3 and outs with little yardage given up, they should get some credit for that. I like giving a small pt total for low yardage given up.
In the current NFFC scoring rules, when a D plays a great game and gives up 9 points and 190 yards of total offense (without a lot of sacks and turnovers) they do not get fantasy points that really give credit for the type of performance the D had. Giving up low yardage is very important to a D's success and should matter a least a little to fantasy scoring. A 3 and out with no yards given up (and resulting 50 yd punt) vs a D that gives up 50 yards and then gets a turnover
Similar results but the low yardage given up gets no credit at all in our current rules.
Giving up few pts is most important to a D's success and we should have a little higher scoring for low pts given up.
Everything suggested here has been used in my local leagues and in my opinion has worked out well.

Generally speaking, kickers and team defenses are after thoughts in fantasy football. I don't totally agree that this is right but that's how it is most of the time. With that being said, everyone knows the scoring of the league in advance and should draft accordingly. QB's in leagues that only award 4 pts for passing TD's are usually selected later than they would be for 6 pts per passing TD. Most defenses and kickers tend to be interchangeable and taken in the later rounds if not the last two rounds.
But I am also in two local leagues that heavily reward the defense for great performance. The scorring looks like this:
Shutout: 20 pts
2-6 pts allowed: 10 pts
7-13 pts allowed: 5 pts
29-39 pts allowed: -5 pts
40+ pts allowed: -10 pts
Sacks, INT's and FR: 2 pts each
85 yards or less rushing allowed: 5 pts
185 yards or less passing allowed: 5 pts
225 yards total offense allowed: 5 pts
I'm not saying this is the way to go but we've played this way in two different leagues for almost a decade now and everyone in the league seems to like it. Defenses like the Ravens have gone as early as the 4th round.
The same leagues award -3 pts for all FG's missed inside 40 yards. Then use the scoring of a 33 yard FG being worth 3.3 pts. etc. There is also a 5 pt bonus for FGs made of 50 yds+. So a 51 yard FG would be worth 10.1 pts. Akers and Janikowski owners have been rewarded graciously with that rule this year.

I'm relatively new to fantasy football compared to other players (long time fantasy baseball player), but I personally think that a pick 6 or fumble recovery for a TD should count against a player more than one that doesn't go for a score. A QB who throws a pick 6 has SEVERLY hurt his team's chances for a win. Doesn't seem very accurate that Matthew Stafford can have a game like he did against Carolina where he single handedly kept the Panthers in the game and still score monster fantasy points.
What about -1 for a int or fumble but -6 for one that goes for a TD? If a guy gets 6 points for scoring a TD shouldn't he get -6 for PERSONALLY giving one up?
Just an idea.

There is nothing wrong with the scoring the way it is; just my opinion.

I would also like to see the defensive scoring increased for points allowed, a shutout should definitely be worth more! No yards allowed added though as that can changes with prevent defense at the end of the game all the time
I'm not for any more negatives, they just aren't fun imo.
