The NFFC's NFL Mock Draft

Post by Tom Kessenich » Wed Apr 27, 2011 2:30 am

Over the course of the next two days we will host a mock NFL draft for the first round of this year's draft. Greg and I will alternate teams and make the picks but anyone who would like to jump in when a team is on the clock is also welcome to take part.

Here's the caveat - let's make the picks based on what we would do if we were in charge. This is our chance to play Fantasy GMs for the real teams.

Let's have some fun with this and we'll see how close we get to the real draft. Sound good? So let's have at it with Carolina now on the clock.

1. Carolina - A.J. Green, WR ,Georgia
2. Denver - Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn
3. Buffalo - Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
4. Cincinnati - Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri
5. Arizona - Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M
6. Cleveland - Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
7. San Francisco - Patrick Patterson, CB, LSU
8. Tennessee - Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama
9. Dallas - Tyron Smith, OT, USC
10. Washington - Cameron Jordan, DE, Cal
11. Houston - J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin
12. Minnesota - Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina
13. Detroit - Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska
14. St. Louis - Anthony Castanzo, OT, Boston College
15. Miami - Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama
16. Jacksonville - Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue
17. New England - Aldon Smith, DE, Missouri
18. San Diego - Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois
19. NY Giants - Mike Pouncey, C, Florida
20. Tampa Bay - Adrian Clayburn, DE, Iowa
21. Kansas City - Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
22. Indianapolis - Nate Solder, OT, Colorado
23. Philadelphia - Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado
24. New Orleans - Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor
25. Seattle - Jake Locker, QB, Washington
26. Baltimore - Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson
27. Atlanta - Akeem Ayers, LB, UCLA
28. New England - Danny Watkins, G, Baylor
29. Chicago - Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina
30. NY Jets - Derrick Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State

The NFFC's NFL Mock Draft

Okay, Tom wants me to make the first pick for Carolina. I'm not going with Cam Newton, sorry, can't do it. All of you backseat drivers can make your choices for the Panthers after I'm done. But I think the GM still likes Jimmy Claussen and so we need a new wideout to replace Steve Smith.

Carolina Panthers select WR A.J. Green, Georgia

Now, maybe we can talk Steve Smith into returning his belongings to his suite with A.J. Green opposite him. :D That sure would be a pretty nice combo to help Claussen progress. Anyway, as a fantasy owner, we're going with the top skill position player in the draft: A.J. Green.

Next on the clock: The Denver Broncos.

OK, with the second pick John Elway gets to make his first impact on the Broncos off the field. I don't see him taking Newton given all the questions surrounding him. Denver needs help just about everywhere but the defensive line is a good place to start. So Elway's pick will be:

Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn

Fairley gives Denver strength against the run and pass and he will provide a first-year defensive upgrade which the Broncos really need.

Next on the clock: The Buffalo Bills

The Bills need just about everything and while Newton comes with plenty of question marks, he's the type of home-run pick the team needs to make to try and energize its fan base. So with the third pick in the draft, the Bills select:

Cam Newton, QB, Auburn

Next on the clock: The Cincinnati Bengals

After fielding offers from Arizona desperately trying to move up, Cincinnati decides it's in the franchise's best interest to move on from the Palmer era and select their future franchise quarterback.

With the 3rd pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select:

Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri -

The kid is described by Mel as the most efficient quarterback we've seen since Manning but will have to develop the deep ball.

Friday draft day trade of Carson Palmer expected.

Next on the clock: a very disappointed Larry Fitzgerald, and the Arizona Cardinals, unless they somehow become the the beneficiary of Carson Palmer or Kevin Kolb's services this weekend.

Arizona takes LB Von Miller, Texas A&M. No question on that steal of the draft.

The 49ers have been linked to Patrick Patterson for awhile now and even with Dareus still on the board I think they go for the standout CB who can also provide some help in the return game. So with the seventh pick in the draft, the 49ers select:

Patrick Patterson, CB, LSU

The Titans are now on the clock.

This is too easy if this really fell this way. Titans take Marcell Dareus of Alabama, an even better Albert Haynesworth. No question here.

Next up: The Dallas Cowboys.

Anyone who watched Tony Romo suffer a season-ending injury or watched the Cowboys' often pitiful attempts to run the ball last season knows Dallas needs to strengthen its offensive line. So this choice is an easy one for them. With the ninth pick in the draft the Cowboys select:

Tyron Smith, OT, USC

The Washington Redskins are now on the clock.
