UFFC's top 12 RBs for 2008 (Pre draft)

Marc, Peterson scares the heck out of me. He's going to go Top 5 in all probability. I think that's a lock. And there's no question he has the talent to merit that pick and even a higher one. But two major issues concern me:
1. Taylor is still with the Vikings.
2. All Day was putrid to close out last season.
Childress clearly likes using Taylor - especially in the passing game. If you're going to be a Top 5 RB you need to either be an every-down player, score a massive amount of TDs or both. I'm not sure Peterson will be able to do that. He's a complete non-factor in the passing game and even though he's terrific near the goal line, he didn't get all the carries there last season (Jackson even vultured a few).
So I do think there's a very real possibility Peterson doesn't live up to his draft billing. His fade at the end of last season is something I still haven't forgotten (dude cost me a lot of money) and mainly it's because Childress kept using Taylor.
And I haven't even mentioned Peterson's running style which lends itself to potential injury.
I love the guy's talent but there are some real issues and real dangers with him. Tom, there's no question to the talent that Peterson posseses, but he did wear down, and Chester is still in the mix. These are solid reasons why I've been saying he's the best #2 RB in fantasy football(even as far back as Gekko's fantasy documentary in Atlantic City)...
IF AP stays healthy and IF AP doesn't lose touches to Chester and IF Gus Frerotte is the starter and the Vikings create a passing game, then this guy is a stud. But I can't afford to gamble with that many IF's in the first round. ESPECIALLY a top 5 pick. [/QUOTE]Yup. His fade into oblivion late last season isn't something I think that should be forgotten. He was absolutely putrid to close out the season and you simply can't have that from your top player. If I have a Top 5 pick I'll almost certainly take him despite these reservations - the talent is just too great to pass up - but I would not be the least bit surprised if guys I rank lower (like Gore for example, who could be a monster in Martz's offense) outproduce him.
The one thing I'd love to see is for Peterson to become more involved in the passing game. There's no good reason for that not to happen other than Childress may not be smart enough to do it. If that changes, then I'll have zero issues with Peterson and will strongly consider ranking him No. 2 behind LT.
But there are no signs right now that's going to happen and because of that I have him ranked in the Top 5 despite my strong belief RBs ranked lower will possibly be better and more consistent picks.

Steven Jackson will not go top 2 in any main event draft.
I'm not saying he's a bust...but he isn't #1.
He never has been #1, and he will not be #1 this year.
He lost around 3 rec per game to go along with the yards that come with those rec. with the new coach.
He's started the first 3 weeks of 2006 AND 2007 with ZERO TD...nice hole to dig out of. I'd guess there were few Jackson owners in the big money other than Benetti the last 2 years...and even Rob barely made the playoffs.
When your early first round pick puts you in a hole the first month, rather than carries your team on his back...that's very hard to overcome.
You look for a player with damn near 100% reliability with the first pick in the draft...and even the first round...and Jackson has not been goo enough or reliable enough.
Set your KDS for 4 or 5, and you'll have a nice shot at him...or 3 of you want him 100%.

You being the "bettingman" that you are Lance, I would LOVE a piece of this action!
Out of curiousity who do you feel are the GUARANTEED two players that will go ahead of S-Jax in EVERY Main Event draft?

Unless injury strikes...enough people will drink the water, and LT and AP will go one/two in each league.
LT has the consistency you need at one or two...and AP's numbers were unbelievable.
Guys like Westbrook and Addai will get early looks.
People will see the 4.2 avg, the 83 ypg, the decreased rec, the pathetic 6 TDs, and the INJURY RISK involved with SJ...and will not take risk in the first two overall selections of the draft.
Would you, Billy???
THAT'S gambling IMO...people have been conditioned to not gamble with the first two picks.

Well, I bet LT is one of the 2 in MOST leagues, and you already have Tom and Diesel saying they WOULD NOT take AP, and you can add me to the list.
Westy is every bit the injury risk S-Jax is, and honestly Addai is the safest pick of those 3.
So what I am trying to say is that I WOULD be willing to bet S-Jax goes in the top 2 in AT LEAST 3 or 4 leagues, and maybe more at the Main.
Would I take Steven Jackson in the top 2? As of right now.... YES. Ask me again in August though, and it could EASILY change.
That being said, I do agree that I probably can piuck 3rd or 4th to get him, but I hardly think it is a GUARANTEE like you do.
The point is there isn't much disparity between AP, S-Jax, Westy, and Addai IMO, and I could easily see them all jumbled up (much like last year after LT and S-Jax were 1-2 off the board).

Just to clarify Billy, if I have a Top 5 pick I'm probably going to take Peterson if he's the most talented RB on the board. The talent will probably prove to be too great to ignore.
I agree with you about Jackson. He's a major talent and I could easily see him being a Top 3 RB. He just needs to stay healthy.

If I also had the #5, I am 99% sure I wouldn't pass on AP either, as after him, it gets murky pretty quick.
I was just using you, Diesel, and myself as examples of who WOULD NOT take AP in the top 2.
And if there are 3 of us saying it on the MB, you know there are most likely many others.
For KDS you probably want to be in the top 5, and then it gets pretty scattered after that IMO.

Billy, I agree - no way I can take Peterson second overall when he's not the clear starter, isn't getting all the goal line carries and is a complete non-factor in the passing game.
I'll say again with regard to another RB - I think Gore is going to be a monster in SF this season with Martz there.
