I'm taking part in a mock draft today for the Beckett Magazine. It's a 12 team PPR draft and I have the 5th pick. I'll try to post some of the picks and I'll post my team afterwards. I have the 5th pick which is MUCH better than the brutal 13th spot I had in the 14-team RotoWire magazine mock Greg and I were in a couple of weeks ago. Here's the list of participants:

Is it Lev Bell or Todd Gurley time at 5?

1.01 1. Paul Kelly
1.02 2. John Hansen
1.03 3. Tom Brolley
1.04 4. Chris Liss
1.05 5. Tom Kessenich
1.06 6. Evan Silva
1.07 7. Kevin Adams
1.08 8. Ryan Bonini
1.09 9. Tom Simons
1.10 10. Brandon Funston
1.11 11. Joe Dolan
1.12 12. Ben Kukainis

My team:

QB-Blake Bortles

RB-Todd Gurley
RB-Jeremy Langford
RB-TJ Yeldon
RB-Shane Vereen

WR-Brandin Cooks
WR-Randall Cobb
WR-Michael Floyd
WR-Emmanuel Sanders
WR-Markus Wheaton
WR-Pierre Garcon

TE-Greg Olsen
K-Cairo Santos
D-Panthers

I like this team a lot more than the RotoWire mock I did a few weeks ago. Much stronger and deeper WR corps. I loaded up on that position and laid off RBs and QBs and still got good RBs in my opinion and a strong QB1 in Bortles. I got jumped on a few players I really wanted like Woodhead as my RB2, Maclin as my WR3 and Tyler Lockett and Kevin White as my WR4 but overall I felt like I put together a strong team here. I'd be very happy if this was a legit league and not a mock. :)

Tom Im curious.. Do you think that Gurley becomes a staple in the passing game? I don't...5 targets in 3 games after Boras took over in week 14. Is it crazy to say with as much potential as Gurley has he has serious limits at 5?

Given his talent, the simple answer is he clearly should become a staple especially given the massive lack of weapons the Rams have in the passing game and the absolute need to help a rookie QB in the passing game with easy passes to complete (few passes are easier to complete than screens and dump-offs to RBs). And getting the ball to Gurley in open space should be a rather obvious mission statement to any coach with an IQ in double digits. Now whether the Rams realize all this and commit to it is the question.

But even if they don't if Gurley plays a full season or close to it I think he's a lock for upwards of 15+ touchdowns. He scored 10 last season in about 12 games on a putrid offense with a pathetic quarterback situation with defenses clearly focused on trying to stop him. That's a reflection of his supreme talent. If the Rams' QB situation improves even marginally (which seems a safe bet at the very least) his TD potential should rise. So I'm more than comfortable banking on the talent and should his role increase at all in the passing game than the upside grows even more.

My goal in fantasy drafts is simple, especially in the early rounds - I want elite talents. Gurley is an elite talent. The situation isn't 100% ideal. But his talent is unquestioned. I'll bank on that. Given all I've seen in the NFL having covered it for nearly a decade and having watched it for as long as I have one thing I've seen more often than not is that talent wins out more often than not. If I lose with Todd Gurley I won't feel bad at all because I lost with an elite talent. That's the kind of play that won't cause me to lose a single night of sleep at all.

I like this team Tom. Solid depth at WR, a solid TE in PPR and you got a solid QB by waiting. Nothing wrong with waiting on the RB2 this year, that's for sure. I'd take my chances on this team in a 12-team format.

Yeah just so many on the board in the middle rounds. I really wanted Woodhead but even after I got sniped on him I didn't panic because there were still so many solid options left. Hell I got Yeldon as my RB3 and I would be happy with him as my RB2 paired with Gurley. Even Vereen is someone I can plug in as a RB2 when the matchup is right due to his PPR upside. The days of needing two great RBs are over. Load up on WRs and then all you really need for your RB2 is someone who can get you double-digit points each week. If you get more that's great obviously but a solid 10 is definitely enough to get you where you need to be each week.
