Bye Weeks For 2009: Different and Weird

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Tue Jul 21, 2009 9:09 am

The NFL shook things up a bit this year with three weeks where six teams will have byes and one week where just two teams have byes. There are also some very interesting weeks where several top teams are off at the same time. Let's take a look at the bye weeks and then I'll seek input on which week is the most disconcerning:

Week 4: Atlanta, Philadelphia, Arizona and Carolina have byes

Week 5: Chicago, Green Bay, New Orleans and San Diego

Week 6: Dallas, Indianapolis, Miami and San Francisco

Week 7: Denver, Detroit, Tennessee, Seattle, Jacksonville, Baltimore

Week 8: Cincinnati, Kansas City, New England, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Washington

Week 9: Buffalo, Cleveland, Oakland, St. Louis, Minnesota, New York Jets

Week 10: New York Giants, Houston

Week 8 looks like a killer with New England and Pittsburgh both idle, while Week 5 has four solid offensive teams idle. Should you plan around these bye weeks or just do your best to have active rosters in Weeks 7-9 when six teams each are on byes. Interesting this year, that's for sure.

Thoughts?

while week 8 could be rough for some teams , i think week 4 could present some issues for some people.
all four of those week 4 bye teams have some big time offensive firepower

Greg, I'd offer some commentary here, but this involves major strategery (GWBush).

I will say that there is an advantage to be had if you plan and execute properly.
2008- Didn't finish last overall in the Classic.

Strategy based on bye weeks IMO is horrible strategy ;)
Ill take a zero before taking a worse backup player for the bye week... What if your starter goes down for much more then the bye, and that 1 week glorious matchup comes and goes like the depth on your team

Yes, I agree, take the BPA without concern for BYE weeks. ;)

Jeez, I wonder why Greg even posted anything about this in the first place?!

Or is it possible that there could be 4 guys for you to choose from on draft day that all happen to fall into something they call tiers and you glance over at the 'ol BYE week schedule and take the guy who works out better with the rest of your team based on BYE week conflicts?

Nah, just pick the BPA and have fun!

Answer

Draft the following the back end of the draft and you will be fine:

1) Randy Moss
2) Brady
3) Ochocinco or Welker
4) LJ
5) Ward
6) Cooley
7) Coles
8) Mendenhall

If this is your core you are strong every week but 8.

I say you start off with players with bye weeks 9 and 6 for example. That gives you a better chance of not haveing 2 players each with bye weeks 8,5,or 4. Because its gonna be hard to not have bye issue's this year, unless you take Rob's strategy.
