Draft position advantage w/ twist
Draft position advantage w/ twist
I propose reversing the draft order of the draft serpentine after the first two rounds of the draft.
The normal serpentine draft goes
Round 1 (1 to 14)
Round 2 (14 to 1)
Round 3 (1 to 14)
Round 4 (14 to 1)
Round 5 (1 to 14)
Round 6 (14 to 1)
Etc
The first draft pick gets (1, 28, 29, 56, 57, 84 etc)
The last draft pick gets (14, 15, 42, 43, 70, 71 etc)
Clearly the advantage goes to the first pick with no real debate other than how big or small the advantage is.
What if we reversed the order after the first two rounds?
Round 1 (1 to 14)
Round 2 (14 to 1)
Round 3 (14 to 1)
Round 4 (1 to 14)
Round 5 (14 to 1)
Round 6 (1 to 14)
Etc
The first draft pick gets (1, 28, 42, 43, 70, 71 etc)
The last draft pick gets (14, 15, 29, 56, 57, 84 etc)
The question now becomes would you rather have the first pick advantage in the first two rounds or would you rather have the first pick advantage in rounds 3 thru 20? The advantage is greater in rounds 1 and 2 but does the cumulative advantage in rounds 3 thru 20 make up the difference? The 14 and 15 picks don’t seem as bad when you get another pick at 29. The First pick advantage doesn't seem so great when you go 1, 28, 42! We could call it the Gekko serpentine. Even if you don't like the system ... it's more fair because there is now a debate on which pick is the better draft spot.
My three cents

interesting idea, but you'd have the #1 and #2 hole owners complaining that they're being raped. blind bidding is simple and the most effective, with the exception of just having all auction-style leagues

That is the initial reaction of most people that here this idea. But The #1 hole is just like the #14 hole in the normal serpentine (only they get to go first in the first two rounds) isn't that better then the old #14 with no upside?

The new #1 hole and the new #14 holes are not as bad as the old #14 hole nor as good as the old #1 hole (isn't balance the objective). I would personally still want the #1 slot but I would see the upside of the #14 slot and the upside of the #7 slot!

I discussed that possibility here:

In a post about half way down the page. It didn't generate much enthusiasm.

I can beleive this was discussed and people didn't jump on this idea. It seams so simple You get slot #1 for two rounds ... then slot #14 for the rest of the draft. Or you get slot #14 for two rounds ... then slot #1 for the rest of the draft.
I think people just want an excuse to bitch about their draft position if they don't want to level the playing field (or they feal they need to get lucky and get a good draft spot as someone else mentioned.)
Oh well ... thanks for the info. You can lead a horse to water ...

Gordon, this has absolutely nothing to do with assigning draft slots. It has to do with how the draft is conducted.

BUT, i now think something much different. i'll leave it at that.

Not a bad idea as I would still take the 1st pick, as I have said this repeatedly....
A DRAFT IS NOT WON IN THE 1st TWO ROUNDS!!!
Yes, the 1st pick is an advantage (not as big as Gecko makes it out to be, as only ONE team going into this week had Holmes on their roster and ZERO had Tomlinson), but if you are good you should be able to overcome it.
Bottom line is that the people who have the Barber's, Owens, Culpepper's,(up till 3 weeks ago), & Curtis Martin's (I.E. THOSE GUYS HAVING "CAREER YEARS!") are the one's who are having a great year!
My picks in rounds 8,9,10, & 11 (I picked 14th) were the following;
8th- WR Anquan Boldin
9th- WR Roy Williams
10th-RB Onterrio Smith
11th-TE Antonio Gates
Conversely, my first 6 picks were;
1st- RB Fred Taylor
2nd- RB Brian Westbrook
3rd- WR Joe Horn
4th- WR Koren Robinson
5th- QB Aaron "throw it backwards" Brooks
6th- RB DeShaun Foster
With the exception of Horn, those picks are average at best. I am 7-2 and 2nd in my league in points. I am "living proof" that you can be competitive drafting from ANYWHERE in the draft.
