Price Point Discussion

I start this topic out of curiosity.

Questions

1) Is price a deterrent?
2) Would lower price points increase interest and signups enough to make up for the price cuts in the long run?
3) Will the current state of the economy have a severe impact on these High Stakes Events?

If the answer to these questions is no, then forget this post.

If yes, then read on.

I answered yes on all 3 myself and especially believe our economy will challenge these live high stakes events. The good news is that hotel accommodations and travel may be easier to get and cheaper for the players.

I know I chose to drop Friday’s events this year to add the second $1300 league on Saturday. I could not afford to play in them all and I wonder how many other folks had to make these types of decisions as our pockets aren’t as deep?

I will likely cut out the 12 teamers from my slate here as I would rather play in the NFFC’s DC and Auction next year than the NBC Main. I prefer the 14 team leagues.

My Proposal

Friday DC’s and Auctions: $350 each (I would also tie these all together to crown a year end champ and payout a few places)

NBC Primetime: $350-650 (A lower price point in the format that most players are familiar with could be a good idea for growth in each of the 4 drafting cities)

NFFC Main Event: No change as this is the signature event. It would remain the High Stakes/Premiere Event.

Summary

I think that lowering the cost of the supplemental events will increase participation in them. This increased participation will help build the customer base which will result in future growth.

You introduce the new players to the format in the cheaper events and you will likely see them add more events to their slates as time goes on.

Rob i missed friday's events forthe same reason, money.I also have silent partners in all leagues which suck.Agree leave main event as is and NBC anywhere from 600 to 1000.I probably couldnt afford friday night so auction prices doesnt matter to me.Will lowering the nbc or auction help ,not sure but not much if i was too guess.

You don't want to lower the auctions, many of those participants consider them the more serious format deserving of higher stakes.

If you drop any prices, you do it in the drafts in an attempt to bring in more novice players.

Good point KJ.

Eddie, your backers are going to be happy again. Pretty soon you'll be listed on the NASDAQ.

I like what was done in baseball with the online baseball championship being linked to the main with a bonus and a lower entry cost. The main should be at the same price but add an online championship for around the same cost of the new online baseball cost and i think you have something there; of course i like a bonus with the two of them linked of a mil but that might be too much for the insurance to handle but a lower cost for the second and a linked championship would be very appealing.

lower entries would definitely increase the chance of me entering a main event. only been able to afford satellites so far.

Rob, I agree. I cut out the Friday events to play the Main double header.

I'd much rather play more events going forward. I will not be playing both Main event next year, unless some changes take place and an online offering is made.

Price is a big factor.

If there was a large $600 contest out there I would be playing that. A prize in the neighborhood of 40K is the same as 100K to me.

I'd love to see NFFC run a minor league event for half the cost.

We wanted to add the Super or 1300 DC this year and weren't altogether sure we could afford both mains. We found a 3rd person to share in some costs(bad year for him to invest, oops) otherwise we would have probably just done the NFFC main and maybe the 650 DC or a few sat's We had to cut the WCOFF completely and next year isn't looking any better. I would love to have a second main or just cheaper 12 team alternative. The economy isn't going to be any better come August 2009, so some alternatives may have to be looked at. Upping entries and trying the 1 million dollar grand prize may work in 3 years if things turn around, but I see Krause missing the desired entry levels until things turn for the better. Good post Rob and glad to see I am not the only one thinking ahead to how and the heck will next year work for us.
