Auction League ? Head to Head?

Post by Charlie Gillespie » Thu Sep 15, 2005 4:06 am

Just curious if anyone noticed the lack of importance of winnning or losing head to head in the auction league. Each division takes 6 teams to the playoffs (out of 14) and 5 of the 6 playoff teams are determined by total points (only the the #1 is determined by head to head). So for 13 of 14 teams your head to head wins/losses don't matter until the playoffs start.

Next year they will need to be changed to Gekko Invite Rules...

6 teams make the playoffs
Seed #1 team with the best head-to-head record
Seed #2 remaining team with the most total points
Seed #3 remaining team with the most total points
Seed #4 remaining team with the most total points
Seed #5 remaining team with the best H2H record
Seed #6 remaining team with the best H2H record

I noticed this also.

It's worse in the Sattellite leagues.

Four teams make the "playoffs".

1 H2H and the next 3 are total points. The playoff teams start with their average points for the 13 weeks. The only time H2H will ever make a difference is when the H2H winner is 5th place or worse. I assume very few teams will actually fall into this catagory. Personally if H2H is not a factor ... I would prefer to see winner determined like Draft Champions ... high points for 16 weeks.

I do like Gekkos set up better because it does make H2H important because it rewards the best one seed (like the NFFC) and it allows the last two spots to be determined by record (not points). So a team that starts out 2-5 with two horible 60 point weeks ... still have a shot at the playoffs.

You guys sure do turn. All I heard last year was total points, total points, total points. Last year in the Auction Leagues we allowed two teams to earn top seeds by winning divisional titles and four teams to earn playoff spots by total points. This year we were asked to have just one division, which I did, so one other playoff spot was given to total points. If people want a new playoff format for 2006 in the Auction Leagues, bring it on. Three and three is fine by me.

Crack smokers prefer an uncontrollable H2H format where blind luck plays a role.

Zef, put down the pipe!

Greg, ignore these people entirely ;)

Points RULE.

Dyv Play Fantasy Golf then Dyv. No H2h there. FFB leagues that are points only are incredibly boring. The excitement, no matter how bad you are of beating someone in a given week is what makes FFB so popular.

For the record Dyv, I am only in favor of blind luck when it is in my favor … and crack pipe or not, I like beating people!

As Charlie pointed out, the auction format is effectively a total pts lge ('til the playoffs). I guess Greg appeased the total pts crowd while trying to slide one past the rest of us ...

Why not keep it simple, top 4 h2h records go to the playoffs, next 2 teams with highest points go. #1 seed is best record, #2 seed it highest pts. Simple, fair, not boring.

--------------------------------------

DYV Monologue: ;) In my day, we played fantasy football for total points. It was boring, and that's the way it was and we liked it! I'm oooooold! And I'm not happy! And I don't like things now compared to the way they used to be. All this progress -- phooey!

In my day, we didn't have these cash machines that would give you money when you needed it. There was only one bank in each state -- it was open only one hour a year. And you'd get in line, seventeen miles long, and the line became an angry mob of people -- fornicators and thieves, mutant children and circus freaks -- and you waited for years and by the time you got to the teller, you were senile and arthritic and you couldn't remember your own name. You were born, got in line, and ya died! And that's the way it was and we liked it!

Life was simpler then. There wasn't all this concern about hy-giene! It my days, we didn't have Kleenex. When you turned seventeen, you were given the family handkerchief. ... It hadn't been washed in generations and it stood on its own ... filled with diseases and swarmin' with flies. ... If you tried to blow your nose, you'd get an infection and your head would swell up and turn green and children would burst into tears at the sight o' ya! And that's the way it was and we liked it!

Life was a carnival! We entertained ourselves! We didn't need moooovin' pitchurrrres. In my day, there was only one show in town -- it was called "Stare at the sun!" ... That's right! You'd sit in the middle of an open field and stare up at the sun till your eyeballs burst into flames! And you thought, "Oh, no! Maybe I shouldn't've stared directly into the burning sun with my eyes wide open." But it was too late! Your head was on fire and people were roastin' chickens over it. ... And that's the way it was and we liked it!

Progress?! Flobble-de-flee! In my day, when we were angry and frustrated, we just said, "Flobble-de-flee!" 'cause we were idiots and we didn't know what else to say! Just a bunch o' illiterate Cro-Magnons, blowin' on crusty handkerchiefs, waitin' in lines for our head to burst into flame and callin' ourselves Dyv, that's the way it was and we liked it!

[/QUOTE]Right, so the fact that any idiot can win on any given week due to dumb luck is why it is popular.

I agree with you.
