Charles Woodson Is Defensive Player Of The Year. But Should He Have Been?

I think Woodson had a terrific season but in all the years I've been following the NFL, both as a fan and as a beat writer for nearly a decade I have not seen a defensive season like the one Darrelle Revis had. I've provided the list of WRs he faced previously and when you take that into account and then factor in the fact that no one - I mean NO ONE - did well against him, that swings the vote heavily in his favor.

As I posted on Twitter this morning, ask yourself these questions:

Did any team have success against Woodson? The answer is yes.

Did any team have success against Revis? The answer is no.

When you combine that answer with the incredible list of star WRs Revis shut down, the award clearly should have gone to him in my opinion. I'm happy for Woodson. He had a great year. But not as great as the one Revis had.

Revis is by far the D Player of the year.

Does Congress determine who wins this award?

Woodson got twice as many votes as Revis did. I'm sorry, but that's absurd. You can make a good argument for Woodson but there is no legitimate argument that can be made which says Woodson was twice as good as Revis.

Really horrible job of voting here.

Hands down Revis. Terrible voting, probalby the same voters who gave the Obama the Nobel Peace Prize .

I can't say I honed in on the play of Woodson and Revis all year... but I can say what Revis did to star WR's this year was insane. I believe some had already given the award to Woodson on the strenghth of several returns for TD's.

They both rocked.

Charles Woodson:

66 solo tackles, 2 sacks, 9 INT, 4 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovered, 27 passes defended, 3 INT returned for TD

Darrelle Revis:

47 solo tackles, 0 sacks, 6 INT, 0 forced fumbles, 0 fumbles recovered, 37 passes defended, 1 INT returned for TD

Charles Woodson wins easy IMO.

Add in the age and respect factor, and the rookie Revis will get his awards if he continues to be as good as he was in 2009.

Deion Sanders only won the Defensive Player of the Year award ONCE in his 14 year career...the only year he EVER had 3 INT's for TD's! Revis is much like Deion...a very good shut down corner.
