You can make an arguement for skill at the league level. But when it comes to comparing teams from all leagues for a top prize it becomes luck not skill. Some leagues will be weaker than others and strong owners will always have the advantage in that case. So a good owner who draws a tough league has no chance at overall based on the draw from a hat. Want the top money player? Put 10 or 12 owners together. Let them put up 10,000 each and the winner take all. You'd never see anyone do that with this format.

You talk as if there isn't a league like this that already exists. You are wrong however on the entry fee, its much more than that ;)

I suggested this once before, but I'll try again:

How about a standalone "Champions League" next year with a spot in this year's playoffs a prerequisite for entry?

Not a huge probability that I'd be involved, but it might be fun even to watch.

I agree, IC. We have 16 leagues. Next year, put the top 14 point guys in one side league, the top 14 record guys in another side league and like the GEKKO league, they can each put up $100 with the winners getting bragging rights and a free entry for 2006. You could even let them decide if they want draft position bidding or not.

Hey guys, if we knew we could get all of the top record guys and/or the top scoring guys to all return we would definitely consider having these side leagues with a free entry as the top prize. We're definitely open to that as a possibility, but again we'd need to get the confirmations from all involved otherwise it wouldn't fly. So we're definitely receptitve to that idea, but the onus would be on the owners involved to commit to the idea.

Walla Walla,

I'm in. Put that 10K league together and let's go next year. Put your money where your mouth is.

For the record I am really enjoying this league and will be on for years to come. The leader not only had a great draft but has had very good free agent moves. He has a strong argument for skill resulting in his lead overall. There will always be some element of luck.

What is your record by the way Walla? I thought you were like 5-1, hence I would think you enjoy the system.

Just curious. Good luck the rest of the way.

John, I have a feeling that your idea of a champions league will grab hold and you will have created more work for Tom and myself. But that's okay! :D

As for your assessment on winning the overall title, I would have to disagree with you there. Maybe that thought process has some validity in baseball where totals are comprised every single day of the season. But remember that in this football contest, you take your weekly scoring average into the playoffs and the team with the best total from Weeks 14, 15 and 16 plus that weekly average is the winner. There's no question that every one of the 32 teams that makes the playoffs this year will have a legitimate shot at the $100,000.

Team NEW is leading the overall contest right now and has a 70 point lead over the second place team. Let's say he keeps rolling along and has 100 points more than anyone else. Basically he takes a 7.7 point lead over anyone else entering the three-week playoff race. Do you really think he has a BIG advantage? And I'm not saying he was in a weak league, but based on your original statement you are saying that someone in an easy league that scores more points than anyone else and seems to have a loaded lineup has a cakewalk to the 100 grand, but that's just not true. Anything can happen in Weeks 14, 15 and 16.

I wanted to make that point rather than talk about this proposed Champions League because everyone who has entered this contest should feel like they have a realistic shot at winning 100 grand, because honestly, they do. Get in the playoffs, get hot at the end and the pot is sitting there at the end of the rainbow. No more excuses. You need to get into the playoffs and then anything can happen.

The Champions League is a good idea and we were already on that one. Thanks for the post John and win some money here so that we can get you back to Las Vegas for baseball. I know what you said on the other Message Boards, but I have this feeling you'll be back with us in March in Las Vegas. ;)

Greg, you can also throw in the Auction Champions and the DC Champions as possible entrants. That way you have a bigger pool to fill that league.

Of course that was self serving as I have a much better chance to win my Auction league than my main event league (<1%).

lol JP - and satellite winners, too !

I'm actually warming up to my main event team.. hanging around 20th overall, not yet seeing monster production from LaDanian or Duce Staley... I like my chances, especially given the playoff matchups.

Well, that is assuming I don't lose all my players to injury this weekend, etc.

Champions events could be fun - you could even try out auction bidding for draft positions with smart players (lol - sorry, couldn't resist Greg!)
