Saw that one this morning and had to laugh. Here is the opening paragraph of the backpage article:

"January 11, 2007 -- They are either clueless and in denial or else visionaries who see beyond the obvious. Time will tell what the Giants co-owners wrought yesterday by standing by their man."

My money is on the former! :D

let me take the latter King! They were faced with hiring a new coach from a pretty weak pool. Who is out there right now ? Bunch of Tices Shermans and Chows. They could easily make the wrong call and here they are sitting on another 3/4 year contract. So they bite the bullet for a year knowing that Cowher will be available, maybe Weis, maybe Beli ?? but they have a whole year to make a list knowing there is no way Cough gets the team into the Champ. game. They also show the coaching world out there that as owners they are "loyal" to a fault - what more attractive scenario for a coach comparing organizations.

funny quote I read.. on the sideline he has the countenance of a man sucking on a lemon...

Two other excellent references to Coughlin:

(1) Profootballtalk.com calls him The Soup ****

(2) Bill Simmons in last week's piece -- "Coughlin is standing on the sidelines looking like he's being robbed at gunpoint again"

You gotta love it.

Your rationale is sound, but why not take a chance on an unproven guy ala Mangini?

I dont think the jets were taking a chance. In some respects yes but Tannenbaum knew Mangini well. There werent going to be many surprises other than both going thru some growing pains at the same time.

They're not even sure who the GM is going to be. They tried to get Pioli. They'll end up in house with Reese and they'll have a year to do their homework and get the HC right in '08.

Tom Coughlin must have an Isaiah Thomas type of deal for 2007 -- one year to make things right, or he's done.

That's about the only scenario that would be acceptable to an incoming GM. It almost never works out when the GM "inherits" the coach.
