Where Did NFFC Champs Draft From In 2007?

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Tue Apr 15, 2008 8:20 am

As you prepare for this year's main event, you may want to have some facts from 2007's NFFC. I went through each league last year to look at where the 26 league champions drafted from and came up with the following information. Twelve of 14 spots were represented in the champion's circle, with half of the champions coming from 1, 2 or 3, and 16 of 26 coming from the top half of the draft. Here's the list of where last year's champions drafted:

No. 1 - 5 NFFC champions
No. 2 - 4
No. 3 - 4
No. 4 - 1
No. 5 - 0
No. 6 - 0
No. 7 - 2
No. 8 - 2
No. 9 - 1
No. 10 - 1
No. 11 - 2
No. 12 - 1
No. 13 - 2
No. 14 - 1

Now, what influence did Tom Brady have on the league races? Some may think he dominated the championship rosters, but would you be surprised to know that only eight NFFC champions had Brady on their roster? 8 of 26 had Brady, so obviously he wasn't the main reason folks won their league titles this year.

So here's another interesting fact about Brady. Although no league champions came from the fifth spot in the draft, Brady was drafted the most times from the fifth spot. Well, that tied for the most places that Brady was drafted at. And interestingly, he was drafted 10th through 14th only once, even though he went in the fifth round in several leagues.

Here's where Tom Brady was drafted from in 2007:

No. 1 - 1 time
No. 2 - 4 times
No. 3 - 4 times
No. 4 - 1 time
No. 5 - 4 times
No. 6 - 3 times
No. 7 - 2 times
No. 8 - 4 times
No. 9 - 2 times
No. 10 - 0
No. 11 - 0
No. 12 - 0
No. 13 - 0
No. 14 - 1

Okay, here's the topic of discussion for today: If only 8 of 26 NFFC teams won league titles last year with Brady producing a record NFL season and folks getting him in the third, fourth or fifth round, can you win with him as your FIRST ROUND pick in 2008? Think about it, in our scoring system does this prove that you MUST have two good RBs and three good WRs to win a league title. Can you honestly win picking a QB in the first round and filling in at RB and WR later?

It's a worthy debate, especially since we have a QB that threw for 50 TDs last year, was a bargain with an ADP of 45 and still was on only 8 of 26 NFFC championship teams. Let's discuss.

O.K. GREG I WILL START THE DISCUSSION. THE DEPENDENT VARIABLE IN THIS ARE THE MASS OF INJURIES WE HAD LAST SEASON.

YES INJURIES PLAY A ROLE EVERY YEAR IN FANTASY FOOTBALL BUT LAST YEAR WAS LIKE NO OTHER AS WE ALL KNOW.

NOW WITH THAT BEING SAID IF YOU DRAFT BRADY EARLY AND GET YOUR OTHER PLAYERS TO STAY "REASONABLY" HEALTHY THEN YOU MAY ABLE TO GET AWAY WITH TAKING BRADY EARLY.

HOWEVER IF HE IS ALL YOU HAVE WITH A RASH OF INJURIES TO MAJOR SKILL POSITIONS THEN IT WILL BE A TOUGH CLIMB.

The Brady stuff is very interesting but going back to the only two spots which didn't produce champ last season (fifth and sixth). According to the NFFC ADP, Joseph Addai was at five and Shaun Alexander at six. It's not a surprise that Alexander owners suffered. He was brutal last season. But Addai was fourth in NFFC scoring last year. Just goes to show that while the first-round pick is critical just having a top player there doesn't guarantee success.

And what about Randy Moss, who also had a record-setting season and was a bargain with an ADP of 46. Where did folks draft him?

Okay, you want a more amazing stat from 2007? How many NFFC championship teams had Randy Moss on their roster? We already know that Troy Young, who led the NFFC during the regular season in scoring, was the only team to have both Tom Brady and Randy Moss on his roster last year. He took Brady the highest in the second round and Moss in the third round.

So knowing that Troy had Moss on his championship team, how many teams out of 26 leagues had Moss on their roster? Give up?

ONE. Troy was the only one to have Randy Moss on his winning NFFC roster last year.

So how did teams win last year if they didn't win with Moss as a bargain in the fourth round and Brady as a bargain in the fourth round? Did free agent pickups like Ryan Grant make the difference? What do you think?

Just to chime in on Brady. My team was hammered by injuries last season and my top RB for a few weeks was K. Watson and WR I was picking between FA castoffs to fill out 2 of 3 spots (I love Anthony Gonzalez!) yet with Brady i was still able to win my league. I do think that with a qb producing like Brady and solid players around yes you can win but injuries throughout the league will play a vital role and the variables in that scenario make things more difficult than doing things the traditional way (winning with RB's and Wr's)
