I don't know NYC geography AT ALL... but I went to Hotwire and did a search including these areas:

Search Includes:
Midtown Central
Times Square - Theatre District
Upper West Side

It turns up a 3 star hotel in Midtown for $133 per night and a 4 start hotel in Midton for $150 a night.

The way Hotwire works is they describe the hotel, give you a list of it's amenities.. you buy it for that price and THEN they tell you which Hotel it is. You can pick the location, though.

I've gotten fantastic deals with hotel rooms in this fashion... it's perfect when you want to stay in an area, but give or take a block doesn't matter. It's not very good if you need it to be within 2 blocks of a specific area.

Good luck if it helps.

DYV, I saw those Hotels you were mentioning. They are about 20 city blocks away from the Hilton. Hilton is considered Upper West Side...So figure about 4-5 miles away from the Hilton. For the price of a cab to those Hotels, and then back again the following day, you may be better off staying at the Hilton. Even the hotel for $133 per night comes to about $175 after tax and those other BS little fees. Add on about $15-$20 total for cab fees and you're about at the Hilton's rates.

P.S...The guys in Vegas look like they're having all of the fun. Playboy's NewYork headquarters is on 5th ave. and 57 street. Maybe Greg or Tom can get someone from over there to be our spokesperson to get this party started...lol

From Penn Sta. about a 20 minute fast walk (33rd to 52nd) or a very short subway ride. Take the E Train (towards Queens) 3 stops to the "7th Avenue" stop which is 7th and 53rd.

i can understand your fear Diesel(especially if you have a honda accord) but for the most part Manhattan is much safer like you said and especailly around midtown b/c that is where the tourists are. Now if you are pushing a Benz you cant be cheap and not put it in a garage....
