Friday Chat Underway

Post by Tom Kessenich » Fri Aug 27, 2004 7:54 am

It's almost officially the weekend and that is a very good thing. So in honor of that, let's get together and have ourselves a little chat this afternoon. So bring you thoughts and topics and let's have some fun.

Tom, What's your plan if someone absolutely cannot make the draft where there would now be 13 teams drafting for a 14 team league ? I know 14 teams HAVE to be filled so I assume a facilitator present would fill that team or would that league be monitored and drafted offsite via the phone ?

Obviously we're hoping we don't have to cross that bridge, but if we do, what we will likely do is have one of the facilitators or one of the Krause staff draft the team using our updated Cheat Sheets. That team would then be offered back to the owner who didn't show up for the price of the event. If they declined or did not respond, it would then become a dead team in the league.

For all of the obvious reasons we hope we don't have to do any of that.

Just as an FYI, we did have a no-show in the National Fantasy Baseball Championship draft this March in Las Vegas. Be forewarned that we start EXACTLY at the top of the hour and we do not wait for anyone, so don't be late. We start at EXACTLY the same time in all three cities and if you're not there "the show must go on." What happened in Las Vegas is a brother tag team called "The Worst Russians" competed in the Friday night AL Auction League and they were a lot of fun. Those guys had a good auction and they had a good time. We said "see you tomorrow for the big draft."

Well, the next day came and they were nowhere to be found. We started all of the drafts at the top of the hour and they had the sixth pick and our rules clearly stated that no-shows would have their selections made by a staffer using the latest issue of Fantasy Sports Magazine. Unfortunately for the Worst Russians, Nomar Garciaparra and every other injured guy landed on their team because the magazine was three weeks old.

They came two hours after the draft started as they thought the starting time was 12:00, not 10:00 and were shocked to see all the drafts going on. We handed the team over to them and they battled for the last 19 rounds of the draft. They have been great sports about this experience and have continued to try and improve their team, but I'm afraid it was a lost cause. I wouldn't doubt at all if they return next year as they didn't blame us for the miscue and actually took the ribbing pretty good.

Now, for the NFFC, we will fill in if needed but we sure hope we don't have to do this again. Instead of an old magazine that has Ricky Williams ranked eighth, we will bring a copy of our updated Cheat Sheets from the online site and use that for any team that doesn't show up. The staffer would go straight down the list and make picks accordingly, regardless of position for the early rounds. When that team arrives, it will pick up at that spot.

We do not want to do this, so please everyone arrive on time and leave yourself plenty of time in New York, which should be crazy with all of the security there for the Republican National Convention. If you're late, you can call us on the cell phones Tom has listed here, but we certainly don't want to fill in. It's your job to get there on time, not ours.

I hope this lengthy explanation helps. We have rules in place to handle a situation like this, but we sure hope we don't have to enforce them.
