I think some owners like to check their Free Agent acquisitions before they leave work on Friday (sorry, but it happens) and set their new starting lineup before they leave for the day. The later we set a FAAB deadline, the less time ALL owners have to readjust their starting lineups before Sunday. And as Tom notes, most NFL injury reports come out early Friday afternoon, not on Friday night.
I'm not saying that in the future we couldn't change the FAAB deadline, but I question if ALL owners want that.

got it. in your opinion, what is the objective of any rule (in general) that is enacted?

I'm not saying that in the future we couldn't change the FAAB deadline, but I question if ALL owners want that. broad...yes. i'd be interested in knowing how many times throughout the entire season an owner set their line-up on friday night and didn't log back in before kickoff on sunday. my guess is that number is so low, that a broad statement would be justified.
you are also forgetting about the poor blokes that are at work on friday and can't use or don't have access to the Internet. a 4pm EST FAAB deadline kills them!

An objective of a rule (from Greg's perspective should be to increase the interest, satisfaction and overall experience of the NFFC ... i.e. satisfied customers).
My personal objective is not the same ... although not necessarily different either. The objective of a rule is to clarify the contest.
My personal desire is to have a contest that provides me with the most entertainment. Since entertainment includes winning or at least having a good chance to win ... rules that encourage the most novice players to play ... yet have the most possible strategic concepts and allow me to use my abilities to gain an advantage would be a best case scenario for me. (A game that anyone can play ... and do well at ... but a game that is complicated enough so skill, knowledge and ability will increase a players chances to win is one that I personally prefer).
For example ... I like the idea of bidding for draft spots because it something I think I would do well at ... but it is more complicated than random assignment of spots so if it was to run off lesser players ... it would be bad for me overall. If the player count stays the same or that idea increases the number of players it would be good for me (and ultimately more fun).
I hope this helps!

We have very few poor blokes in the NFFC. : D The average annual household income here suggests blokes who DO have Internet access at work. A 7 p.m. EST deadline doesn't give those other blokes much time to pedal home and make FAAB bids, does it?

(in general) baseball FAAB is done 18 hours before lineups are due. football FAAB is done 45 hours before lineups are due.

Maybe all of the planets were briefly aligned.....or a distant star exploded, causing galactic waves to spin the earth's rotation in the opposite direction. Whatever it was, it has caused the universe to turn topsy-turvy, because I agree with Gag. I'm against anything that gives the fannypacks out there even a slight chance to weasel out of their poor management skills. I take my 4th and 5th RB/WR draft picks as serious as my 1st and 2nd RB/WR picks. Those who aren't as diligent on draft day shouldn't be given that escape route through the flex, no matter how miniscule. 7-10 points from Olindo Mare as a plug-in at the flex, sure helps some mushroom cap who otherwise would have been forced to start Obafemi Ayanbadejo. See Sag.....it is just a small world after all.
