I know you can't implement this into this year (or maybe you could? ), so I don't have a problem asking for this in my current position.
Is it possible to give the TOTAL POINTS leader after Week 13 SOME compensation???
I think you would agree that it is MUCH more difficult to lead in total points after 13 weeks, than to have the best record in a 14 team league, yes? I feel there should be a MINIMUM of a free entry into next year's NFFC (actually $2,500 sounds good) given to this person, as in my mind it is quite an accomplishment.
Also, I vote for TOTAL POINTS in each league to get the $5,000, and best record to get $2,500 (since I know someone else would bring that up). It would STILL make it important to win your "head ot head" matchups, as $2,500 is DEFINITELY worth playing for.
It just takes the "luck" factor out of it. For example, in any league, you could have Team A lose to Team B. After 4 weeks, Team A has more total points than Team B, and had these 2 teams played in ANY of the first 3 weeks, Team A would have defeated Team B "head to head". As "luck would have it", Team B defeats Team A in Week 4. Does this make Team B the TRULY better team? I know this happen in the NFL ALL THE TIME, but fantasy players want "as little luck as possible" when we invest this much $$.
I know MANY others go through the same thing. It just would eliminate the "luck factor" a lot more, and reward the TRULY better team.

I have to respectfully disagree as I always have in the past when this topic has come up. One of the thrills that keeps people involved is the fact that every week matters. To create a concept where we are concentrating on points takes much of the week to week fun out of it and will create even more dead money as a team wouldn't even have any incentive to play spoiler. Part of FFL is to tie this game to the NFL and how many times has the luck factor, SOS etc kept a better team out of the playoffs...quite a few but that's why teams continue to come to play.(well except the Raiders...lol) Would you say that a lower scoring team like the Ravens shouldn't be in the running because their point total is down and they don't play the Colts every week but instead get Offensive inepts over the years like the Browns?
As an aside, I have always spoken out against the removal or lessening of importance of the H2H, even in a year where I was on the outside looking in which was a bitter pill to swallow. It's part of the game and definately an area that should not be tinkered with.

I disagree completely with your second point about luck.
Head to head is what drives these games.
I'd like to see head to head count more and overall points less.
It's just like real football that way. So you scored 200 points one week? You are a "truly better" team because S Moss gets 3 tds? In real life it gets you one win. (if that) Congrats.
But don't break your arm patting yourself on the back, you still have to win next week. And the week after that.
Who cares who leads the NFL or MLB in scoring?
The Chiefs were more skilled than the Patriots? I did not know that.
Head to head record takes more skill than overall points in my opinion.
Bye weeks, injuries, schedules. Real football.
Playing good every week. Beating your opponant.
Watching the scores. Playing a top team in your league with your 1st draft pick on the bench.
Ask 100 fantasy players if they would rather be in a head to head league with live scoring, or points league, 99 will say head to head.
And with good reason.
Ride that wave.
Embrace it.

I'll let others debate the merits of rewarding h2h champions more than total points as this discussion has been held three years running now. There have been discussions of paying $2,500 to h2h league champ, $2,500 to total points champ and another $2,500 to anyone who wins both in their league. If two teams tie, those two teams would battle for the remaining $2,500 from Weeks 14-16 in a separate league playoff format. That's a possibility.
When I set up the payout format, I felt h2h was a big part of fantasy football and deserved the top league payout and kept more teams in line for that prize throughout the year. We give extra reward for total points through the grand prize structure and therefore teams who excel at total points have a better chance of winning additional prize money. But I'm not afraid to tinker with the format if demand warrants it.
All are good discussions. Rich Dunn sent a similar e-mail to me yesterday and I was going to respond to this topic eventually. So it's all good.
I may even bring up further changes for 2007 and beyond, like changing the playoff formats for the Auction Leagues and the Ultimate Leagues. Should we go to total points from Weeks 14-16 for those rather than h2h playoffs? Some folks have suggested that to make all of our playoff formats more uniform. It's a worthwhile suggestion.
