A very slow 2009 draft
Hey guys, if you end up doing a dc auction, or a regular dc auction, i'm interested. (i was in the one with a bunch of you last year..)
also, Billy, if you do that extra auction in Chicago, I'm interested in that as well, as I'm tentatively coming to Chicago for the $650 auction there.
(If you can't tell, I prefer auctions lol).

A very slow 2009 draft
OK guys I'll give you my thought process as i picked my first 4 players.
I have one very real theme for 2009...SPEED...and that's exactly how I've executed my draft so far. I really wanted YOUNG..HEALTHY...FAST..players who were likely to see the ball alot.
Round 1....I have DeAngelo ranked #7 among RB's.
I have him very close with Chris Johnson because of the score from anywhere on the field capability. I expect his TD's to level off around 12 or so and yardage to stay the same at worst.
We saw last year what he can do at his best and that was sharing time with Stewart. If JS gets hurt for any length of time DeAngelo could once again be at the top of RB scoring.
Round 2...Greg Jennings was my pick even though I have S.Smith ranked several spots higher. 2 reasons I chose Jennings.....1)He fits my criteria as a game breaker and plays with a very good QB.....2)I couldn't start with 2 Panthers after watching Delhomme implode in his last game.
Jennings was a safer pick IMO.
Round 3....Eddie Royal was a complete no brainer for me here. Along with leading all WR's in rushing last year he had 91 catches and 5 TD's as a rookie. Playing with a top 3 QB doesn't hurt. Royal will be a 100 rec player this year as the beneficiary of the Marshall double coverages.
Round 4....Kevin Smith may be the best kept secret at RB in 2009 because he plays on the winless Lions but look at the numbers as a rookie. 18th among RB's in NFFC scoring.
10 games in double digit scoring. 5 of those games were 16 pts. or better. 39 receptions. 20+ carries in 7 of the last 9 games. My steal of the draft so far.
4 round accessment....balanced start 2RB...2WR..one of the last to grab a QB but that's not a huge deal in a DC. Everyone who has a QB has given up something to get one so I feel like I'm in good shape. Can't wait for March...so I'm in bad shape there.
That's it....fire away!

I'll take the first shot.
I love the Deanglo pick. He was the number #1 RB last year and started the year in a total time share and still split a lot of carries with Stewart. It's hard to imagine but this guy still has upside.
Jennings is another solid pick. I like the balance of RB/WR (even though I didn't do it myself.) I also project Smith higher and probably would have taken him but Jennings was next best available.
Royal - while I like Royal I'm not as sold as you are. His production was steady but he did get off to a huge start with Marshall out the first game. We don't know anything about their running game moving forward and Marshall is so good will he command the ball more? Will Sheffler step up this year and steal catches? He's a solid pick but I'm just not sure about any upside.
Smith could be a very solid pick but I consider him very risky. (That doesn't mean I wouldn't have taken him.) He is limited physically and not a gifted RB. He has done a decent job but I could see Detroit trying to improve at his positin and him ending up as a RB2. The new coach likes him so that's a huge plus. I consider him a fairly high risk but all high reward pick. The safe route would have been a stud QB but you dare to be different. Didn't you hear Billy call for a QB run???
Nice start - well balanced - now you're not tied to having to take a certain position with your next couple of picks. (Like I am.)

Route C
The good news is you started this League.
Now lets get to the bad news, your picks.
1.07-D.Williams, is one of 5 guys I liked there. So good pick. If you knew S.Smith would be there for you in round 2, do you pick say S.Jackson or M.Turner instead? Good Pick
2.08-G.Jennings, like this pick and I would not have picked S.Smith either if I had D.Willams. Solid Pick
3.08-Eddie Royal, I think it was your best pick. So GREAT Pick.
4.07-Kevin Smith, not the best player on the board. IF he gets most of the touches and stays the #1 back, than it was a Great pick. But to me it's a OK pick.
Over all B-.
Of course everyones rankings will be different and how everyone goes about a draft will be different as well. To me in a DC League you need a top QB. 9 qb's are gone and I know for sure at least 10 will be before you pick again. Yes there's still QB's out there who could be a top 10 QB.
Will K.Smith be a top 10 RB. No
Will Eddie Royal be a top 10 WR, I think he could. That's why I loved that pick.
Great job,
John

A very slow 2009 draft
Ok my turn.
I like the deangelo pick a lot. He really stepped up last year. He is still young and going nowwhere but up. Even in delhomme falters deangelo will still be productive.Stewart may still a few TDs but he is pretty much an all around back.
Jennings is a good pick here. Like most I had Steve Smith rated a little higher but it is hard to start off with teamates unless you talking about one of top 3 offense's in the leaguewhich the panters are not. Good pick.
Royal is not a bad pick here. Cutler is gonna throw the ball around a lot and this guy is a
good player. The only problem is with marshall
and sheffler there are a lot of targets in the
mile high city. Maybe I would have went with a bouce back net like braylon edwards. But good pick overall.
I like kevin Smith. He does play for the lions
But he doesn't have any competion for carries. He even catches the ball. Your assessment is right. I do not think Detroit will bring in another back. I like this guy. He has a future and can be had fairly cheap.
Overall A very good start I think. I like the 2 WR
2 RB way to to start a team. If it was me I would feel the need to get a QB soon. There are about 5 left that could be counted on. That would be my only question about this team. Other than that I am pretty impressed.

I like doing this in between months. It's cool because everyone has their own unique ideas about what it will take to win. At this point nobody is right or wrong but I am glad we all think a bit differently.
The one thing that always bugs me drafting in the main event is the common public opinion on players. By that time there have been hundreds of discussions, mocks and early drafts which all lead to the common opinion I'm talking about.
You can almost script the first 5 rounds every year and that makes it really tough to hold onto your own thoughts.
At that time of the year all fantasy players stop counting sheep and go to bed reciting the top 70 over and over!
I love doing serpentine drafts early and auction drafts late because of this.
This league we are in may be the most fun serpentine draft league I've ever done. I love the dynamic of no outside influences or public opinion here.

Agree 100% Jeff. The good thing is I really don't look at anyone's rankings. I use it to try and see were players are going on the norm. This League is a solid League so discussing the picks and breaking it down of what we were thinking at the time of the pick is only a good thing.
I'm sure most think it may be a disadventage or others will have a edge on us when it comes time to draft at the main League event. 7 months from now alot will change and if you think I'm not high on Kevin Smith, that may be true now. Maybe by the time of the draft Jeff will talk me into taking Mr.Smith in round 3.
Who's up next to rate or berate Jeff's picks?
