A very slow 2009 draft

Post by Sabretooth » Sat Feb 07, 2009 2:33 am

Since everyone is not jumping at once I will...

1:14- Calvin johnson..It was between this guy and Brandon Marshall. I hope I don't regret my choice. I could not ignore the 12 tds receptions and tremendous upside.
2:01-Chris Johnson..I didn't think Johnson would be here for me. I thought I might be choosing between portis and lynch or someone like that. I think 1'800 combined yds and 12 tds is possible for him.
3:01-Clinton Portis..since I considered him in the last rd this was a pleasent surprise. He is a warrior whom I think still has some life left in him.
4:14-carson Palmer..it was between him and mcnabb. I wonder if Mcnabb ends up somewhere else.
If carson can stay healthy he is good for 4'000 yds and 25 td+.

I prefer the rb,wr,wr,rb,qb format when drafting low in the draft. I could not pass on portis at the top of the 3rd. I believe the rb is a little more valuable in a DC. If it where head to head I probably would have went with TJ or welker instead of Portis. Overall I like my team and am looking forward to my next pick. I believe I am "on the clock" as we speak. I cant wait. This is a lot of fun. It is very different than any other draft I have been in and I hope to make it a yearly event.

Glad you decided to post Sabretooth, and keep this thread going!

Here is my take on your team....

1st- WR CALVIN JOHNSON- This guy has flat out sick skills. How anyone can score 12 TD's with that crap turnstile at QB is beyond me. He easily would have been my pick here.

2nd- RB CHRIS JOHNSON- I'm not as excited about him as most. With LenDale there, it takes away some of his value. Don't get me wrong, he is solid, but I wouldn't be surprised if he produced more of late 2nd/early 3rd round value this year.

3rd- RB CLINTON PORTIS- Have always been a fan of Portis, until this year when I had him in the Main. He really faded hard down the stretch, and you just have to wonder if they will spell him more often early, as all those carries he had early in the season caught up to him. That being said, you certainly didn't reach, and there is probably no downside at taking him 3.01...nice selection.

4th- QB CARSON PALMER- Not a fan of this pick at all. Far too many question marks with his health, TJ could be gone, and Chad Johnson by himself wouldn't be nearly as effective.

OVERALL GRADE- C- I love Calvin, and thought you got nice value with Portis, but the Carson Palmer pick could hurt you, and might force you to take a QB#2 a little quicker (which would keep you from upgrading another spot).

So Sabretooth, based on the fact you said that you prefer rb,wr,wr,rb,qb and have the first pick when we resume in March, can we assume you are taking a WR? :D

If so, you want to talk about who you are leaning towards? ;)

1:14- Calvin Johnson- Great pick, about right value wise.

2:01-Chris Johnson- Great pick, as you know I looked at picking him at 1.08. Great Value.

3:01-Clinton Portis- Portis is one of my favorites. Why, he always falls in drafts, and just keeps putting up the numbers WHEN he plays. Very good pick.

4:14-Carson Palmer- Didn't like this pick, after Romo-Rivers-Rodgers fall of is huge. Would he have been there at 6.14, I think he would have. Huge reach.

Grade B-, first 3 picks were great and a way better start than that Raiders Guy. :D

Should be interesting who you pick at 5.01. I can't wait.

Good Job,

John

What's the bet? :D

R.Brown vs. Thomas Jones. Total points thru 16 week? Of course I get Brown. ;)

John Bumping, I never want to pass up easy money. :D

Calvin Johnson is going to put up numbers regardless of who the QB is, great pick.

Chris Johnson is a good pick here. I understand what Billy is saying about White but I feel Johnson needs another back to share carries with. He isn't built to shoulder the load. As long as White is there Johnson should stay fresh.

Portis really faded bad this year. I think the Redskins are a prime candidate for one of the top 3 rookie RB's

I thought Palmer was a bit of a reach.

HERE ARE MY COMMENTS ON YOUR TEAM SABRETOOTH:

CALVIN JOHNSON: FLAT OUT STUD!! GREAT PICK AND PROVED LAST YEAR HE IS A MONSTER.

CHRIS JOHNSON (WILDCARD PICK): HE SHOWED EXPLOSIVENESS LAST YEAR. JUST WONDERED HOW DURABLE HE IS. HE HAD MONSTER GAME GOING IN THE PLAYOFFS AGAINST BALTIMORE AND HAD TO LEAVE. HOW BAD WAS THE ANKLE? WHO KNOWS BUT IF HE CAN PLAY LIKE HE DID LAST YEAR HE WILL BE GREAT BUT IF HE IS "CHRIS BROWN" ANOTHER FLASH IN THE PAN AS A TENNESSEE RB THEN IT COULD BE WORRISOME.

CLINTON PORTIS: ONE OF THE BEST VALUE PICKS THIS DRAFT. COULD EASILY BE YOUR RB1 STATS WISE ONCE NEXT YEAR IS DONE.

CARSON PALMER: SCARY PICK. IS HOUSH GOING TO BE THERE NEXT YEAR? IS CHAD GOING TO WANT TO PLAY? WE WILL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE IF WE CAN GET THE PALMER OF THREE YEARS AGO.

OVERALL GRADE C+ GREAT POTENTIAL BUT JUST SOME FEW VARIABLES.

Must say I can't wait to Grade Jeff's(kapefear) team. Minus Haley and I beleive Warner, his team is falling apart. Jeff is Brady coming back? You sure. :D

John

PS. Sorry 3 more weeks before we start back up.

All right, I suppose I will be next on the chopping block!

1.06- RB FRANK GORE Was happy to get him here, and went in figuring I was getting DeAngelo. Frankie is tough as nails, catches the ball, and has a new head coach who wants to run him into the ground!

2.10- WR STEVE SMITH Delhomme looked HORRIBLE in the last game, but Smith is a guy who can take it to the house on any play. He is very consistent and has that huge upside each week as a WR.

3.10- RB THOMAS JONES Was shocked to get him here. He was VERY productive last year and has everything but an over the hill QB around him intact. I still like nice weekly numbers, and they may try to run even more in 09.

4.06- QB JAY CUTLER QB's fall off a bit after him, and I knew there would be a run, so I was happy to get him. He has 2 great WR's, a nice TE (when healthy) and he can run. I like Cutler a lot this coming year.

OVERALL GRADE- ??????

That is for you guys to decide! :D

Mr. Billy,

1.06- RB FRANK GORE- I have Drew and Gore even, so Great pick.

2.10- WR STEVE SMITH- Top 5 Wr in this system, maybe the best Value pick in this Draft.

3.10- RB THOMAS JONES- First two rounds fell in your lap. As you know I emailed you right before this pick. I'll say this I hope Gore does not get hurt. Even the best get some wrong Billy.

4.06- QB JAY CUTLER- Again Great pick, and was hoping he would fall. But I knew better.

So to wrap it up. A top 5 RB,WR and QB. Top 4 team.

Overall Grade: A-

Nice job Billy, :D

Sabretooth,

I have to agree with everyone else. I know you're high on Palmer but with his stock down so low right now he might have been there for you later. I would have gone QB but probably somebody a little safer.
