Last year in the $1300 DC in Vegas four team drafted 3 defenses.
They scored 214 points, 205 points, 190 points, and 188 points.
The remaining teams drafted two defenses. They scored 219 points (twice), 215 points, 196 points (twice), 187 points, 184 points, 154 points, 153 points, and 131 points.
The teams that draft three defenses had an edge over three teams. They had no real edge over seven other teams, but they gave up a roster slot to those other teams. Which is more important the third defense or the depth at another position?
The third defense might be only worth 20 to 40 extra points over 16 weeks.
I'm not a fan of three defenses and last year the two teams that finished 1st and 2nd had two.
I'm also not a fan of drafting one, but those are the risks you take during a draft. I knew there were 20 defenses left when I drafted Nicks for Jeff. I gambled and lost. If St. Louis scores 7 points a week, it would be 105 points over 16 weeks (one week would be a zero). His team will need to make up 75-90 points in another area. Will a receiver justify passing a second defense? Maybe...if that players score 200+ points, it possible he is used enough to gain soem points back.
But the real question is: Did the 6 teams give up something to the other six teams that only drafted two defenses? They have a clear edge over two teams that have one, but only a slight edge if any over the other six. Is it more important to take an edge over a couple of teams and lose a roster spot to the other six? ANOTHER THING IS THAT DEFENSES NEVER GET HURT OR PUT ON IR. JUST LIKE LAST YEAR IN JULES GAMERS LEAGUE I DRAFTED KYLE BOLLER AND ROYDELL WILLIAMS WHO DIDN'T EVEN PLAY A SNAP LAST SEASON.
GRANTED THE DRAFT WAS IN MAY SO IT WAS HARD TO FIGURE THAT AT THE TIME. BUT I SEE YOUR POINT AS WELL.

A very slow 2009 draft
I'm guessing that some teams saw an opportunity to leave a team or two with just one DEF and then took a third DEF.
The difference between three and two DEFs isn't as much as the difference between two and one DEF, but the difference between three and one DEF is quite a bit.

Follow Me At the Def. postition, but Kapefear and Jersey Yo now have two more position players that could put up huge weeks. It comes down to hitting on those picks. All in all, everyone goes about filling out there roster different.

I personally like having 3 defenses because you never know if your #1 will underachieve, so having a #3 that COULD overachieve keeps that position strong.
Also, like Kotrax said, you don't have to worry about them not playing, as they are on the field for a GUARANTEED 15 weeks.
In my experience, taking a skill position over a defense has not helped. Those players are 5th or 6th in the pecking order at their position and rarely score for your team due to being ineffective, losing their job, getting injured, etc.
Of course there are always "exceptions", but that is just my view on it.
