Need some help with questionable drops

Post by lichtman » Wed Oct 06, 2004 12:48 am

In my home league (12 teams, 2 RB starters, no flex), the following two free agent transactions went down yesterday:

Claim: Amos Zereoue
Waive: Michael Bennett

Claim: Ricky Williams
Waive: Artose Pinner

Are those reasonable transactions? I think they are not, and it is a reverse-order of standing waiver league. I do not think these were done with malice, I just think they are poorly informed.

In the mid-season draft that Dyv posted today, Bennett was a 4th round pick and Pinner looks like he was 7th round.

To make matters worse, the guy who dropped Bennett has 2 D, 2 K and 2 TE AND has Deuce out with injury.

Need some help with questionable drops

Speaking as a commissioner of my own league, although both moves are questionable I do think you could justify each of them:

1. Bennett is expected to miss 4-6 weeks at least. Given the fact he re-injured his knee in practice that doesn't bode well for his ability to hold up the remainder of the season even if he does return. And I would not be surprised if he didn't make it back at all. This guy has tremendous talent, but he simply can't stay healthy. Plus, I'm now 100 percent convinced that even if he does return, the starting job will belong to Smith so Bennett will end up being a reserve and change-of-pace RB. There's no way I see Tice going back to him as the starter given the knee problems he's having. So even though Zereoue could end up being nothing more than a one-week wonder he should continue to have a role in the Oakland offense and is clearly more valuable for the next 4-6 weeks than Bennett.

2. The hot buzz is Ricky wants to return this season. Will he? Will the NFL suspend him for four games or the entire year? All of those questions need to be answered. But if he does return and even if he misses out on four games, he could still provide a bit of help in the stretch run. Yes I realize he hasn't played and the Dolphins stink, but he is a talented RB and so I would like his chances to succeed or at least be productive more than a marginal RB. Plus, Pinner hasn't set the world on fire by any means and there are no guarantees he'll fare well as Jones' short-term replacement. Plus when Jones gets healthy he'll be the starter again.

So to wrap all this up, while I personally would not drop Bennett or Pinner due to the importance of RBs in every fantasy league, I don't think either move is completely outlandish. The owners obviously are banking on upside in one instance (Williams) and in the other appear to be trying to find a suitable replacement for a player (Bennett) they don't believe will contribute much, if at all, the rest of this season.

Just my 2 cents.
