Thoughts On All-Play Format In Weeks 12 and 13

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Tue Nov 25, 2008 10:01 am

Okay, first of all: Were there any surprises in the NBC Sports NFFC Primetime all-play format this week? Did you see any of the top teams take a loss this week? Did it affect anyone's standings?

There is no question that we want to keep a 13-week regular season in both main events, but it's tougher to work that in with our 12-team format. The format we have now rewards the top teams and punishes the lower scoring teams, but I do realize that it's tough to make up ground at the end of the season under this format.

Let me know how this week went and then we'll analyze it again next week. I think it's important to have this format when there are no byes, and honestly I'd hate to start the season with two weeks under this format. But maybe we do one in Week 2 or 3 and one in Week 11 or 12 when all of the teams are playing for 2009. Just a thought and any feedback on this subject is good feedback.

Thanks all and good luck this week.

It should be the first two weeks. But like the idea.

In my league the 2nd place team, who was 9-2 and trailed the first place 10-1 team actually lost his game. It goes to prove that anything can happen. Some of our lowest scoring teams scored well and he hatched an egg....

In the long run, I think things are fine as is. Maybe weeks 1-2 might make more sense, who knows. All I know is that after scoring a ton of points all season, I still ended up at only 7-5 through week 12. But in our league the team with the best record is 2nd in points. I think things play out the way they should.

Very interesting Pete. Thanks for the feedback. And yes being second in total points for the entire contest and 7-5 in your league is wild, but that's just the way it goes sometimes.

Now tell your wife that if you two weren't smooching so much celebrating your 30th wedding anniversary in Las Vegas that you could have been in line for the $1 million bonus if you had done both main events!!! :D This is your year my friend, I can feel it!! :D

In my Primetime league our first place team survived with a win due to a huge game from Jennings and another team getting a one-catch effort from Colston, holding onto the 6th spot by 4.7 points.

That could have left a 3-way tie for first at 8-4 and another 3 at 7-5 with one more week to go. I never thought it could happen with the all-play but it almost did.

I much prefer weeks 1&2 when most teams are theoretically at full strength. If your team is weak and you go 0-2 then those are the breaks.

Doing it all at the end is boring and anticlimactic IMO.

A good compromise might be week 1 and week 11 (first week after the BYE weeks). This way it's not all bunched up together.
2008- Didn't finish last overall in the Classic.
2009- Didn't finish last overall in the Classic or Primetime.

I like it. Thanks as I figured there would be some teams that would struggle for a win in this format just like in h2h. Interesting.

The 13 week schedule HAS to stay. Can you imagine teams being idle last week when the NFL set a new weekly scoring record? Crazy.

I don't really like it the last 2 weeks either. In my Chicago league the there were 4 teams tied for first and the 2 top teams both lost. The best team (by points) lost by .8 points to the 6th place team.

Wayne Wow, that's wild. I guess it can work after all.

Yeah, I think splitting up the two "all play" weeks between the first half and second half makes sense. It would be anti-climactic to do it in Week 1, that's for sure. Maybe a Week 3 "all play" format and a Week 11 "all play" week to split things up and not have the final week be decided this way. Just a thought to consider for 2009.
