As for online, I think it's harder to sneak someone through online because the ADP list or default list of every available player is right there staring you in the face. It's tough to sneak anyone through online.Talk about something I don't pay any attention to and that's the online ADP'S. Half of the players on those lists by the 10th round have already been cut, traded, or retired.

To be a 100% honest, I agree.
Some player is skipped and drops for whatever reason and sits on top the ADP for 5 rounds or so. I see value in the guy at some point ... but some slug owner grabs him because he is caught without a player, or maybe even gets the player auto drafted and has too much pride to ask for a do over. Ultimately ... I think the same thing ... dead money.
But this really is a bigger issue than names being called out at another draft IMO. I truly believe you only here the name of a player spoken by another owner at another draft because you are sitting on that name (kind of like being in a crowded room in your own conversation and hearing your own name being said by someone from across the room AND HEARING IT).
I am so PRO "dead money" ... that I am happy to live with all of these issues.
Nice analogy Greg.

I agree with what everyone is saying here about "dead money" and Greg's point that we all start at the same time and are in just about the same round and that all makes sense.
I have the solution for you...draft with Chris Slack and his buddies! You or your fellow drafters won't hear ANYTHING from anyone but them!

This (hearing names shouted from the ajoining draft table) isn't a huge issue to me, but it isn't about whether someone is or is not "dead money." Of course we all want a league full of guys who are "dead money" in our leagues. My point (and I think it is the same point being made by Rick) is that some don't like when other things influence what players are picked.
It is similar to being in an auction, you have $36 dollars budgeted for Freeman McNeil, you are bidding with one other guy.. you bid $31 and the other guy is clearly on the verge of bailing out and you are about to get McNeil $5 less than you would have spent... then some idiot who isn't even in the bidding for the player start yapping "come on.. its only one more dollar, he is the last good starting RB left.. come on! come on!..." And then then the guy bids another dollar...
I just have never been a fan of anyone being allowed to influence picks during a draft/auction.
I am sure there are MANY OTHER THINGS we can discuss that could maybe freshen or improve the draft day experience (with limited/no cost) in en effort to further separate the NFFC as the premier event to play in.
This seems like a good thread to throw out ideas.

Give me the live draft experience as is, or if anything, with more.
Anything that adds to the event feel is a plus to me, whether it's more cities, more contests, more leagues per contest, better venues, better food, eye candy, raffles, post-draft parties, etc.
These are the kind of things that got me hooked to national contests and their live drafts in the first place.
If I wanted a quiet, secluded draft experience, I'd choose the online option.

Glenn That's my feeling too Glenn. Having run the NFFC (and NFBC) for the past six years and having participated in one other live high-stakes event, there really is something about the experience of being in that room with so many other drafters and leagues. It's a pretty cool feeling and I like that aspect. I think it's part of what makes the live events an "event" and not just a group of people sitting around in a room or drafting online. For me, nothing beats being in that room when the drafts are going on.

I agree with Glenn and we should congratulate him on his great baseball start. Glenn-X has game folks, you have been warned. Good luck the rest of the way in roundball.

I have the solution for you...draft with Chris Slack and his buddies! You or your fellow drafters won't hear ANYTHING from anyone but them! Chris said he's taking the year off and his buddies too. He won league titles in 2007 and 2008, but needs a break. I'm not sure if that's good news or bad news for Chicago, but just telling ya.

Greg,
I am a huge fan of the live draft too. I am not in favor of taking away that buzz.. I am not in any way saying we need a silent draft. I was just piggybacking on the point someone else made about hearing players shouted out at other drafts. I have heard 100's of people complain about this so it isn't a non issue... it just isn't a big issue.
I just think we should be open to ways to limit it or someday remove it without taking away the energy of the crowd at a live draft.
Some ideas to throw out.
-I like the idea of some kind of countdown leading up to the draft. We see them on tv all the time for big events. Even ESPN had one counting down the minutes and seconds to Strasburg throwing his first pitch. I know a big clock is likely not possible but maybe whoever is running the draft in each city occasionally going to the podeum to announce "15 minutes to first pick..." 10 minutes away guys..." "Everyone start getting settled... we are 5 minutes away..." That would create a buzz... a sensation and feeling for everyone that will not be forgotten no matter how bad a season some may have.
At that moment everyone thinks they are winning.
-I like the idea of acknowledging past champions to connect some history and prestige with the event.
-I think an announcement to the group that if their leagues finish early NOT to get loud and disruptive to remaining leagues that are NOT finished would be helpful.
-I think a serious message should be delivered about this event being of the highest level and not a typical home league or yahoo league in an effort to convince people how important it is NOT TO QUIT ON THE LEAGUE AND THEIR TEAM if things go bad. This issue comes up every single year for a reason.. it is a huge problem. Addressing it on draft day could help some.
any other ideas?
