Bye Week Problems

Post by SS » Mon Oct 29, 2012 8:16 am

We had a situation in our OC league where a team had Baltimore (on bye this week) in his starting lineup and TB Defense on his bench this week. I brought it up to Greg indicating that this is not right.

I think there should be a rule added that if you have a player or team defense that is on bye in your starting lineup and you have a viable replacement then that replacement should be inputed in your lineup by a computer. This would prevent collusion. I'm not saying there is collusion going on in this particular league, maybe they just forgot to set their defense in the lineup? I know RTSports has a computer look at lineups the night before to make sure that there are no problems like this.

Anyone's thoughts?

I can tell you this, Scott. I'm in too many leagues. I've screwed up one of my lineups at least 5 times this year. Yesterday I left Jordy Nelson in a Dynasty league lineup. I've had it happen in RTSpoirts leagues, too, and the computer did not catch or correct it. It pisses me off every time knowing I screwed up one of my lineups. But, I have nobody to blame but myself.

It isn't right, but it is just a mistake. It also isn't collusion (the most overused inapplicable word in fantasy sports).

Not really a fan. Considering points are more important than wins in this league, I don't think the rare bye week starter will cause many issues. I don't think we should reward someone who forgets to check their lineup. Odds are someone isn't going to win a league because his opponent left his bye week player in for week 8.

More importantly, what if a person has a WR on bye and has 3 wide receivers on his bench? It'd be ridiculous to give that person the player that scores the highest points, since it's likely he wouldn't even choose that player anyway. There'd be no right way to choose which player gets put into his lineup.

This seems like a decent idea on the surface, and if someone isn't checking their lineups for multiple weeks, then they probably aren't gonna win much anyways -- but there's some issues that arise when you make moves for others:

1. It wouldn't happen in this format with a Defense or Kicker, but what happens when say, Arian Foster is on bye, and the computer puts in a player who has 1 carry for -1 yards and -0.1 pts? He would've been better off leaving Foster in.

2. What happens the 2nd week, does the computer then put back in Arian Foster for him week 9? Because as far as the owner was concerned, Foster was already in and he doesn't need to check it for week 9.

The better question isn't whether or not to fix others lineups, it's how long is the H2H portion of fantasy football gonna survive in High Stakes games. At least Points Scored are more important then H2H Wins in this system, but a lack of those H2H wins can still cost you a lot of money.

It's definitely a problem but I don't see a great solution.

And Jack, I have no problem with you leaving anyone who is out in your lineup when you're playing me!

Thanks for your comments guys, I don't think the owner did it on purpose, was just one of those rare cases where he forgot to slot the right starter in...
