Re: SOLD OUT: Beckett Magazine 12-Team League
OK here are the rest of the teams. It's easier having the draft board to refer to, but that will only be available on ScoutPRO. Greg and Tom would like to keep some of the draft under wraps until the magazine comes out
Team 6: Nice start with Spiller and Rodgers. He did a nice job of getting 4 solid WR’s to go with his starting core even though I’m not a Miles Austin fan (He does produce when healthy). Mathews in the 5th is a steal……. Oh wait it’s not 2011 or 2012? Amazing how things change. Just let the record show that I have been the biggest Mathews fan since his Fresno St days. Reminds me of my high school girlfriend who dumped me right before prom night. I think I might start a “Mathews anonymous club” to help coupe with our rejection and disappointment. OK sorry let’s get back on track. I like how he waited on TE and got Finley and Daniels. Finley still has talent and plays in a high octane offense so plenty of upside. Then he paired him with a steady reliable guy like Daniels. I like the overall makeup of this team, but he needs Mathews to stay healthy to bring it to the next level. With Woodhead in town I think his upside is lowered. Not a fan of BJGE and Pierce is a nice guy to have in case of a Rice injury, but I think he is getting a little too much hype. I don’t think he steals enough touches from Rice to have huge stand alone value. I think this team will be good, but Mathews holds the key from it being great.
Best Pick: Finley Worst Pick: Patriots defense
Team 7: Lynch and Morris to start. On paper it looks solid, but you’re getting nothing for receptions out of them. Would have liked to see Rice for Lynch or Forte/Bush for Morris or actually both. Gronk in the 4th will either be a steal or a pain the ass come week 1, but he’s worth it there. Taking Kaepernick in the 5th felt like a reach with Brady and Newton still on the board which tells me Kap is his guy. He did well to get depth at RB with Bradshaw and D-Rich, but it came at the expense of his WR’s. I’m seeing bust all over James Jones this year and as his #2 WR I’m really scared. I think Boldin could work as a #3 if he had 2 stud WR’s to start. Sanders and Morgan are nice upside picks, but WR depth is thin. I don’t see Patton and Allen being startable this year unless there is an injury to the Chargers WR’s. This is a good example of a team going TE/QB back to back which hurt the WR position. After doing that he really didn’t have the luxury of taking Bradshaw in the 7th and then the D-Rich and Franklin picks is just overdoing it. A WR would have made this team look better. Overall I don’t see enough receptions on this team. A couple of different picks and this team would be much more balanced.
Best Pick: Emmanuel Sanders Worst Pick: Colin Kaepernick/Jonathan Franklin
Team 8: After starting Jimmy Graham and Demaryius Thomas I was curious on how this team would turn out. By taking Graham at 1.8 it’s obvious that this owner wanted to create and edge at TE over all other teams. To pull this off you need to have extreme confidence in your drafting ability and need a couple of things to go your way later in the draft. Right off the bat I see a ton of risk with this team. DMC is a boom or bust pick (nothing new), but I don’t mind him as a #2. As a your #1 RB your asking for trouble. Bell is another risky pick (I have him on my bust list) especially in the 4th over a guy like Ridley. I don’t hate Nicks as his #2 WR, but when you factor in other risky players on the team I think he needs the stars to align for everything to pan out. Taking RG3 as his 2nd QB in the 9th to keep him away from another team is not a bad thought in a contained league (Meaning this league is not playing in an overall contest). In the end this team has too much risk on it with DMC, Bell, Nicks and Gordon. I like the players individually, but not all on the same team. This team will also struggle with depth at RB. Joseph Randle seemed to be a reach at 10 since he needs Murray to get hurt to have any value. OK on the second thought that is not that farfetched. This team needs guys to stay healthy and find some RB depth on the waiver wire to compete.
Best Pick: RG3 Worst Pick: Le'Veon Bell
Team 9: Looking at this roster you can see that this team is put together well. Good depth at RB even though MJD is risky to me. Top QB and good depth at WR. Getting Rice at 9 and then Marshall in the 2nd shouldn’t happen too often. What’s impressive to me is after his great start he did not give away his advantage. All too often you see teams start off great with their first 2 picks, but then it’s what you do from there that makes or breaks your draft. This owner decided to wait on TE, but he also knew when to pull the trigger. By taking two close together it tells me this owner knew he needed to get 2 viable starting options to not create a weakness on his team. Ingram as his #4 RB is very sneaky since it didn’t hurt him at other positions. This team should be in the race all year and is one of my favorite teams.
Best Pick: Mark Ingram Worst Pick: None if MJD is healthy
Team 10: Right off the bat I notice this team has elite QB and TE play. I don’t hate T-Rich, but I can’t possibly taker him over McCoy (I guess just player preference). I like Andre Johnson in the 3rd and although I don’t like Antonio Brown as his #2 WR it’s probably not the end of the world. I’m really not feeling D-Jax this year and as your #3 you’re just asking for trouble. As I go down his WR list I’m starting to get worried. I think he is going to struggle to fill that WR3 spot. Jeffery has upside, but he has to contend with Marshall, Bennett and Forte for catches. He could have some issues at RB2 also. I like Ivory, but I’m just not sure how that situation will pan out in NY. I would love him if Goodson got released or suspended, but upside could be limited with him in the mix. I think the Jets take a step forward this year (It’s hard to take a step back from last year) on offense with Marty Mornhinweg in town. I think this owner might have panicked when looking at his RB situation and reached for Pead in the 8th (Prefer D-Rich) and I think that situation in STL will be a RBBC at worst. Stewart is coming off surgery to both ankles so I don’t see him being a good option this year. I also don’t see the need to take 3 back up QB’s when your starting QB is Drew Brees. Just wasted picks in my opinion that could have been used to add more depth at WR. I think this team has some pieces to make it work, but will need a couple of guys to step up that I’m not seeing right now. Draft plan definitely needs some work.
Best Pick: Andre Johnson Worst Pick: Isaiah Pead
Team 11: What jumps out to me when I look at this team is explosive. Team has potential to put up big weeks. I also think adding Murray as your RB1 is asking for trouble, but when you start your draft with AJ Green and Julio Jones you can’t have everything. I like that he added Miller and Vereen at the 4/5 turn. That gives him RB depth with guys that have high upside. Reece is a sneaky pick. It’s early for Vereen right now, but he is obviously sold that he will be the guy that picks up some of the production that was lost with Hernandez and Lloyd. Like I said sometimes you have to move a guy up to make your plan work. I also like Austin overall, but especially on this team when his first 2 WR’s are studs. He has decent depth at WR especially if Broyles or Sanu step up. One of my dilemmas is what toi make of the Luck, Wilson, Romo and RG3 group. This owner decided to go with Luck and I can’t really dispute that. I like Cook, but I think he should have grabbed a better back up than Allen. I think with all the weapons the colts have it’s not going to allow any one player to step up and be very productive outside of Wayne. This team should contend for the title if Murray stays healthy.
Best Pick: Marcel Reece Worst Pick: None
Team 12: Awesome start to the draft with McCoy falling to pick 12 to pair up with Dez Bryant. I like the first 4 picks. Dez, McCoy, Fitz and Peyton. The biggest question is Montee Ball at 5.1 I’m not a fan of Ball this year, but I could see being wrong also. Seems like offense is set to throw more and you never know with Fox. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Moreno and Hillman getting their share of touches every Sunday. Is Vereen or Mathews any less risky? No. This was a tricky pick and looking back on it I think if I’m this owner I’m pushing RB back and taking Nicks with the pick. I now would have an elite QB, stud RB and 3 very explosive WR’s with Nicks as my WR3. Next turn he takes Vernon Davis and Gio Bernard. Can’t fault him there because VD has the potential to be a top 3 TE. Bernard gives him nice depth as his #3. After that is where I think things unraveled. Blackmon is a reach in the 8th rd with him being suspended for 4 games to start the year. I would want my 3rd WR before taking him as an upside play. I don’t like the Ballard pick in the 9th based on how this team is setting up. I would have liked to see a WR at that pick to start adding quality depth to really the only position that is questionable. I like the Randle and Lafell picks to help his WR group. Overall this is a really solid team. I guess I’m just disappointed because as I was watching this draft play out I thought this owner had a chance to put together a juggernaut, but looks to have fallen short. One or two different picks and this would be the team to beat.
Best Pick: Giovani Bernard Worst Pick: Vick Ballard

Agreed. Very insightful. Bonus points for liking my team too:)
Cant wait to see alot of you guys in NYC!

Re: SOLD OUT: Beckett Magazine 12-Team League
Appreciate the feedback, Nelson.
I think sometimes with RBs we get carried away with PPR and fall in love with catches. Lynch & Morris look like a lock for 2,500 yards and 20 TDs and that is a great building block.
WR didn't go my way in the draft, Marshall/Thomas before my pick in the 2nd, Welker before the Gronk pick, Nicks before my Kap pick etc. I think my Wr group is OK though. I love Harvin, Jones isn't going to catch 14 TDs again but I don't see major regression with Jennings gone and I think Boldin is a solid WR3 with no Crabtree.

I agree. It's all about production. Lynch and Morris were both Top 10 RBs in PPR last season despite neither being a receiving option. I don't care how the production comes as long as it's there and both those guys should produce at strong levels this season barring injury.mattjb wrote: I think sometimes with RBs we get carried away with PPR and fall in love with catches. Oh and Finley was Greg's worst pick. Total homer pick there.

Re: SOLD OUT: Beckett Magazine 12-Team League
true story: I got alfred morris for $4 as my last pick of the NY/CHICAGO auction last year...after swinging and missing at several players just trying to spend my last 4 dollars of the draft. He was my best player all season long...a) because he is good....b)cuz the other $196 I spent sucked.

Re: SOLD OUT: Beckett Magazine 12-Team League
Very nice job on the thorough writeups Nelson. Thanks for taking the time to do this. We all wanted to learn from this draft and not only did we learn but now the rest of you will understand how you lost $600 to me!!
C'mon, you took Ryan Mathews in the first round in every draft last year!! 5th round is a bargain this year!! But yeah, I felt dirty just hitting Submit on that pick. I knew there was no way that Ball or Bell would make it to me, but did Mathews really have to be the leftover RB2 for me?
And as for Finley Tom, you'll be cheering every time my TE gets a cheap TD this year. And don't worry, I backed him up with Badger Owen Daniels, so I'll be fine if he sucks early.
We all have solid, competitive teams. I don't see a single team that is weak. Should be a fun, competitive league. Good job all.
We will have one more mock draft in this magazine: Our debut 10-team Cutline format. Tom will finalize the draft date for that one with the participants. See ya there.

Good stuff Nelson. I think your mostly right. So if Montee Ball is the Main Back come September I have the Team to beat? I know Blackmon is suspended but when he comes back that should make for a nice WR3. The reason I drafted him there is because I want to have the best team come November and December not to worried about September. By the way what a wild OC draft last night. Some very surprising picks. I like your 4-5 turn WR pix. I think that league will have a lot of separation between the top 4 or so teams and the bottom 8. I didn't plan on taking MJD in round 4 but what the hay with the WRs I drafted early. Im hearing that MJD is a full go for training camp
