This is EXACTLY right!
The other contests that don't use 3RR, you almost have to take an "inferior" RB to an Adrian Peterson or Jamaal Charles at the 1/2 turn or say "sure.....Frank Gore or Lamar Miller will be my #1 RB this year".
The kicker this year is at the back, Calvin and Dez weren't even available, and if you took AJ Green and Brandon Marshall, and (instead of Julio or DeMaryius), then you don't really have an advantage there either. Knowing you can get a Darren Sproles at the beginning of the 3rd makes it much easier to "swing and miss" on one, if you choose to go WR-WR from the back.

Most important to me is having the CHOICE. This year, I really wanted a Top 3 pick (AP, Martin or Charles). Thanks to lots of my league mates choosing to pick in the middle or end of the 1st, I wound up with a top 3 pick in all but 1 league. 3RR made that possible.

Great point!
When you are putting up $350, $1500, $5,000, $10,000, etc. why SHOULDN'T you have a choice???? Instead of leaving it to a completely random selection, and HOPING you get what you want???
KDS doesn't GUARANTEE you get your top requested picks, but it sure beats the random alternative.

Since we now have KDS automated for all leagues, we rarely look at what preferences owners were getting this year. But with this thread being posted, I thought I'd look at some of the later live drafts to see if KDS worked for folks. As most of you know, we had some folks who wanted KDS to be run more closely to draft dates and some folks still wanted a week or more before draft dates. That's something we can still debate for next year, but the bottom line is that KDS does allow owners to get their preferred draft spots and 3RR helps to make that happen.
Here's a look at the NFFC Diamond League, which had KDS run two days before the Friday morning draft:
** KDS preferences received by all 12 owners was 2.66, which means on average owners got better than their 3rd preference.
** 5 of 12 owners got their 1st preference.
** 8 of 12 owners got a Top 3 preference and only one owner got worse than their 4th preference (7th preference).
The reason this works is because everyone has a different view of where they'd prefer drafting as you can see from the 12 Diamond League preferences below:

Agree with everything said here.Love the 3RR and KDS. One little thing for next year if possible, I am just curious what my pick was. Was I the 3rd, 4th, or 9th pick out of the hat. I thought we saw this years ago but I might be mistaken. It might be there now and I just missed it too.

Sorry I missed this yesterday. Yeah, when we did all of these manually we had that data and sometimes shared it, but the way we have it set up now I don't have the random order available after we've run KDS. We save all draft spots and KDS preferences by each owner so that I can look all of that information up, but not the random listings that the computer selects. Sorry.
