This is not going to end well for daily fantasy. I just hope there is no overspill into season long fantasy.

Greg/Tom. What are your thoughts on how this could effect season long fantasy? Everything we read is about daily fantasy. Are we going to have to meet in my basement for the super auction?

ESPN, YAHOO and major sports leagues/ owners want no part of being aligned with controversy. One could probably assume that they did their homework before diving in so deep with DFS. If their attorneys determined that it was ok to support it, I would assume there is confidence that no laws are being broken for operating or participating in daily fantasy sports.

There is no reference to season-long fantasy games in any of the reports or inquiries that I've seen. That being said, the last thing this industry needs is more states questioning the legitimacy of fantasy sports and creating laws to prevent their residents from playing legal games. I'm not saying that is going to happen, but it could with Florida at the forefront.JETS SB wrote:Greg/Tom. What are your thoughts on how this could effect season long fantasy? This was going to be a year in which we worked with states like Arizona, Washington and Iowa to allow their residents to play fantasy sports under the same guidelines in the UIEGA carveout language. Let's hope we can still move forward, not backwards.

Let's see what the inquiries present before burying DFS. It's very possible that the Attorney Generals will provide some guidance and tell the industry what is needed to be in compliance with current law. Sure, there are some AGs who are questioning whether DFS is legal or is gambling, but that seems to be covered by UIEGA in 2006. Plus now there are some big partnerships in place with these DFS companies who can help in this narrative. I can't say that nothing will change -- especially on a state-by-state level -- but it seems like we now have a very vibrant industry that needs more guidance and safeguards than anything else. I hope we get it.Jersey Dawg wrote:This is not going to end well for daily fantasy. I just hope there is no overspill into season long fantasy.

This is so predictable. Nevada has ordered both sites to shut down.
The bureaucrats are trying to regulate something that doesn't need regulating. All because of some admittedly questionable activities. Meanwhile the 'big boys" --- the banks, the brokerage firms, etc. are doing so many questionable/shady/possibly illegal things that it would make your head spin. And on a much greater scale of $$$.
Again: let the free market rule. If the games are not fair, the customers will stop playing them, and the companies will fail. For example: see WCOFF and the other sites no longer in existence.

Now that FD and DK are getting publicity every day from the AG actions, maybe they can cut back on the idiotic commercials that have caused some of their problems.

The ruling by the Nevada Gaming Control Board that Daily Fantasy Sports is gambling is obviously HUGE news for the industry. It's a headline grabber at a time when everyone is piling on the DFS industry. But it's also an example of stupid American politics at play.KenGill wrote:This is so predictable. Nevada's Gaming Control Board is catering to MGM's CEO and other casino operators. Plain and simple. Nevada residents didn't ask for this ruling, the casinos did. And Nevada is unique in that they can call this gambling and ask operators to get a license and pay appropriately to operate there. It's politics at play and it just hurts Nevada businesses who were getting revenue from DFS companies and those who were hosting fantasy companies in their state. And of course, it hurts Nevada residents who want to play DFS games.
Nevada is protecting its gaming businesses and making headlines against DFS. Same reason why fantasy can't be played in Arizona and Washington: They are protecting their Indian casinos and state lotteries. Let's call it like it is: Dumb politics.
This doesn't affect season-long games at this point, but it's still not good for the industry. Actually, these last two weeks have really sucked for the industry. Growth is being stymied by politics and stupidity. But it's time for the industry to come together, self-regulate our partners, put guidelines in place and show that we can grow and prosper legally. Then it will be up to the individual states and their residents to decide if this is good or not. Time to move forward and improve everyone.

Will the FSTA have a statement soon regarding all that has transpired? Seems like the customer can only piece together the information from news articles and public message boards.Greg Ambrosius wrote:But it's time for the industry to come together, self-regulate our partners, put guidelines in place and show that we can grow and prosper legally. No statement at this time, but the FSTA is definitely trying to find a solution to this problem and it needs to happen right now. Almost everyone agrees what needs to be done now. Let's get it done.King of Queens wrote:Will the FSTA have a statement soon regarding all that has transpired?
