An interesting side effect to this year's WR craze is that some great values can be had at other positions. For instance, I'm drafting 5th in this league and landed Gronk, Martin, McCoy and Duke at 6, 7, 12 and 9 picks after their ADPs (using just the 7 drafts from the last 14 days). For me, hard to pass on. Of course, the flip side to this is that I'm now chasing WR3/flex (after taking Green and Cobb in rounds 1 and 3).

I wonder if we're overreacting to how last year's RBs performed and was that just an outlier? IOW, "One Year Does Not a Trend Maketh"? :?
  • From 2012-14, the median ADPs of RBs who finished with 200+ points were 26, 34 and 22. Last year was 57.
  • From 2012-14, the number of RBs who scored 250+ points were eight, six and seven. Last year was two.
Now, we all know the NFL has changed a lot over the past few years; but RBs were just decimated last year, either themselves, or in some cases, injuries to key players around them and/or and a penchant for pounding cheeseburgers affected them (I'm talking to you, Eddie Lacy! :x). Among the top-15 in last year's ADP, we saw at least half affected by injuries, in addition to the usual handful of busts among this group.

So if the NFL is so pass-happy, after landing a strong WR1 and WR2, can WR3/flex production still be found in the mid-rounds or even later? This approach would delay getting a WR3 and flex WR til after the first 40 or so are already gone; but is that really so bad? The presumption, I assume, of those who draft 4 or 5 WRs to start is that they hope to get great WR production from all three of their WR spots, as well as flexing a WR. But if so many drafters are taking the same approach, can they really ALL hit on most of their WRs? And are WR3 and flex WRs really that easy to predict?

Let's take a look at last year's top 48 WRs in NFFC points, as that represents [the unlikely event of] all twelve teams in a league having optimized their WR drafting (3 WRs + flex, times 12). IOW, if none of us whiffed on any WR picks.
  • Among WR1/2 territory (top 24), there's a pretty strong correlation between ADP and actual finish: only eight WRs (33%) who finished in this range were drafted later than WR24.
  • However, at WR3/flex range (25-48), a whopping 15 of them (62%) were drafted later than WR48! :o
So to me, that says that "Yeah, the NFL's a passing league now, but good luck trying to figure out ahead of time which ones will produce WR3/flex level stats!"

In conclusion, are all/most RBs outside the top 4 really semi-useless? And if we don't land 4 or 5 WRs in the first 7-8 rounds, are our teams doomed? Or does last year's greater than usual number of RB injuries coupled with how difficult it is to predict WR3/flex production, as well as the available draft values at other positions due to the popularity of the Zero RB approach make a return to "old school" style drafting relevant again? Hmmm...

Good analysis Mike. Sometimes it's good to zig when everyone else is zagging. That could be the case this year.

That being said, I'm not sure the RB carnage we saw last year was a one-time thing. The game is so physical that expecting 16 games out of your RB1 is a lot more risky than expecting 16 games out of your WR1. That doesn't mean injuries can't happen to wideouts as I found out last year in an early August draft when two of my first three picks were Jordy and Kelvin Benjamin. But the amount of injuries to RBs makes it tough to load up at that position early on.

Every year is a new year, though, so let's see what happens. I agree with you that nothing stays the same and everyone chasing last year's numbers could be disappointed. The game changes quickly.

Should be fun. Thanks for taking the time to share the info.

You're so right Greg about RBs getting hurt more than WRs; I've been doing a lightweight version of Zero RB since 2009, when we used to go WR/WR/QB from the end to start our main events.

But maybe this year the scale has tipped too far? With good RBs falling into rounds 4-6, we don't necessarily need a full 16 games from them to be worth their draft price (especially in a DC). And if the WRs are getting picked so fast and furious that by rounds 5 or 6 the ones still available are in the WR30+ range, I'm not so sure the eventual WR30-48 finishers will come from this potentially-unreliable bunch just because that's where they finished last year. :?

IOW, in what do we have more confidence, for example, at pick 5.8 (56th):
  • Getting WR3/4 production from WR34: in the range of John Brown, Kevin White, Crabtree, etc. OR
  • Getting RB2 production from RB18: one of the Murrays, Lewis, Yeldon, etc.?
Maybe our WR3 and Flex WR will ultimately come from picks far later in the draft than this? But RB18 could be firmly in the RB2 range by year's end. And we do all still have to start 2 RBs, and they can't all be last year's Devonta Freeman. ;)
