Should There Be A Third Place League Playoff In 2009?

I've been trying to find as much data as possible when it comes to paying out $1,250 for third place, so I looked at each of the NFFC Primetime races today and compiled the top four scores through Week 10. It sure looks like there are a lot of close races for total points. I'm not sure what this info tells us, but here are the top four teams in total points in each NFFC Primetime league with three weeks left:

How about just award the people that deserve it IMO

1st in points= first in league money and playoffs
2nd points= 2nd in league money and playoffs
3rd in points=3rd in league money and playoffs and a wildcard birth with enough points.
Would also like wildcard expanded, 32nd overall should be in the playoffs if there is 50 or so in the playoffs....

Imagine that just awarding those who earned it

I don't see why H2H is so exciting when you could have 3 h2h matches a week, just look at the top 3 scorers in your league and that's who you play every week

That would be a more disappointing because, if that does happen, the team with the 4th most Total Points would be in the League Championship Game.

Missing the League Championship Game with an 11-2 record and the 3rd most Total Points, and not winning any money, isn't so bad, if the 2 teams in the League Championship Game are the 2 teams with the most Total Points. Missing it, and winning no money, because the team with the 4th most Total Points finished with the Best Record would stink.

My real concern, however, is that the 2 teams with the most Total Points (FFWingman and 69TH Place) are already eliminated from having the Best Record and have had no real chance for the Best Record for a couple of weeks already.

They are the 2 top scoring teams in the league and they are both 5-5!

And one of them will not make the League Championship Game.

Just more evidence as to why H2H is not the best way to go.

However, I understand that H2H must be used in the Main Event and isn't going away.

Mark, I hear what you're saying, yet there is a push for h2h to be even MORE of a factor in the payout of prizes. If you have the third highest points in your league through 13 weeks and then miss out on a three-week playoff for third place money, how would that feel? Probably not too good either.

Greg,

The payout for 3rd Place should be to the team with the most Total Points that did not make the League Championship Game. There should be no playoff for 3rd Place.

The payout helps protect the team that may have had the most Total Points or the 2nd most Total Points and still did not make the League Championship Game.

I am not arguing that there should be a playoff for 3rd Place.

I would argue that H2H should not be involved at all, but as I said, I know that H2H has to be involved in the Main Event.

I am just saying that it would stink to be 11-2 and 3rd in Total Points and not win any money because the team with the 4th most Total Points finished with the Best Record.

My thoughts are keep 3rd place money as is. if you want to send 4 teams to the playoffs...fine...but then someone would want 5.

H2H already plays into this contest enough IMO.

Why not pay 1st and 2nd based on points and 3rd based on record. Wouldn't this resolve the issue?

Greg - u have a 10% point rule for the playoffs. what about having a H2H rule as well. Anyone finishing 11-2 or better would make it. or if u wanted to lower it to 10-3 or better. how many extra people woulda made it last year? this way very good H2H performers (the basis for your leagues) would be guarenteed a shot in the playoffs.

Have to vote with GG here - a 10-3 record, better than 75% winning percentage but not enough points could have been the best a team could do with a major injury that hurt them in total points, but they were a good enough manager and timely with their FA pickups to win 3/4 of their weekly matchups. Like the 10% exemption on total points this probably adds less than six or seven teams in any given year and would certainly help salve the fact they won NADA in their individual league.
