I can say that I completely locked in on Matt Forte last year after watching one 3 play offensive series in the pre season. I look for certain things and he did them all in a 3 play sequence. I got him on every single fantasy team I had last year but 1.

I saw something special in someone in week 1 again too this weekend and though I understand the chance I will hit on a Forte like season are slim, I am quite certain I will get this player on multiple teams. While I agree with you the pre season may be over hyped and isn't overly important as to relates to the real NFL season. I think some good/great nuggets of information can be extracted from these games. Tom made a good expample with his opinion that Fred Taylor might be done. I also agree with you that Orton will progress and get better in this new system.
...maybe so but for every Matt Forte in pre-season 2008 and Willie Parker in pre-season 2005 there is a Jacoby Jones circa pre-season 2007...although the boxscore stats might indicate otherwise, proceed with extreme caution and don't get overly enthusiastic is what SNAKE is stating here, that's all...SNAKE
But for every Jacoby Jones, there's a Frisman Jackson in Week 1 resulting in a giant sucking sound of Free Agent dollars down the toilet.

I love this hobby.

For those getting overly excited/critical about one performance, remember, it was only one game.

Unless you've watched many of these games, the stats have already lied.....and remember, the Lions were 4-0 last preseason.

Oh, almost forgot, McFadden still stinks!

GK,

I agree that much of what we see in the pre season is irrelevant. Many of the offensive sets are very basic and designed to get starters some reps and comfort with the speed of the game and then to evaluate other players. I do not get excited for pre season performances or stats as much as I pay attention to little things like if a young RB can pick up the blitz properly to get the trust of the coaches or if a young WR catches the ball with his hands or body.

On a sidenote.. if you are starved for NFL football it is just more fun to connect value to these games otherwise I am pacing waiting for week one to start!
