Online Fantasy Championship

Greg/Tom,

I've been reading a bit about the new ventures for 2008. I noticed that an advertisement you've got out there says you will be holding an online championship for those who can't make it to a live event...However, it's half-way to June and no contest has been announced. If you guys aren't 100% sure if it will happen, do you think it's good for business to announce it for all to see? Just my 2 cents, but I'd fear that people who aren't 100% sure if they want to dive into the high stakes world of fantasy would get worried if they see an inaugural contest cancelled before it ever happened.

Below is the paragraph I'm mentioning:

*Together, NBC Sports/Rotoworld.com and F+W Publications will also expand our games format to include online individual satellite leagues for both formats and a national online championship under the NBC Sports FFC format with grand prizes starting at $20,000 and lower entry fee levels. This model will open the door to many fantasy sports enthusiasts who just can't get out to the live drafts in person but who still want to compete for a national title and a larger grand prize.

Marc,

I have asked GA and TK a few times about this....

I think it's for next year?????

TK acted like he didn't know what I was talking about.

Is it for this year or not?????

My guess is that we'll probably see this spelled out once the NBC Sports FFC website is up and running.

I don't speak for Greg and Tom, but it looks like it was intended for this year, but may not happen until next year. Just my opinion.

But I would suggest eliminating that paragraph from their ads if it IS for next year.

Diesel, the plan is to introduce an online championship with a $250 entry fee and a $20,000 grand prize. It would be the same format as our main event at just 1/5th the price, with 12-team leagues, top two making the overall Championship Round and total points from Weeks 14-16. That being said, we need to get our web site live this week first and introduce everything we're doing with the live events before we start confusing everyone with an online championship that would include 400+ teams.

Eventually, I'd like to run that same format at $150, $250 and $500 levels, but not this year. There isn't enough time to do this properly for all levels.

We are still evaluating the overall championship format and will have more concrete plans soon. Right now we are doing all we can to finalize our NBC Sports Fantasy Football Championship web site and should have that live by the end of the week. Once we have that going we'll evaluate everything and decide on the online championship. Right now I'd say it's 50-50 on that format.

Now that is a contest I'd be seriously interested in, $250 12 man for an overall $20,000!

With the addition of NBC and FFPC this year I wonder (given the economic conditions)how many different events can be supported? I also wonder with all of the online choices being offered by the big four if it will be difficult to fill the live main events.

It's a good question Mike, which is why I'm glad we have a big promotional partner to generate new members to our contests. We're not trying to monetize customers from other contests, we're trying to introduce this area of the market to new players. I'd hate to be in this space right now without the promotional might to reach hundreds of thousands of potential new players and to reach potential sponsors, who can add much more to the overall contests. We are working on title sponsors for our events right now and we think that's an area that wasn't possible before we added NBC Sports and Rotoworld.com.

"Big four"?? I'm not sure who the big four is, but I know we're doing all we can right now to have a successful season with the contests we're offering and we're only concentrating on what we can do. Everyone else has their own marketing plans and I wish them all good luck.
