Remember players control which Leagues will make it. So it's as easy as that.

Its probably fair to say players have a significant influence in which Contests have the best opportunity to be successful over the long term. But the players aren't "running" these Contests or making the financial, marketing or other business decisions that will determine which of these Contests succeed given an adequate player base.
I suppose, its also fair to say a Contest doesn't have any chance of success without the support of players.

A major problem with "new" contests, and I really wouldn't necessarily classify NBC as a new contest within this framework, is overcoming the built up inertia of existing contests. You could probably also refer to it as the "Pavlov Dogs" effect. Most FF players, including me, are just like Pavlov's dogs; they are conditioned to return to the place they received a "treat". That is, most past participants were more or less satisfied with their experience playing in either the NFFC or WCOFF and if they choose to participate again this year they will probably be "conditioned" to return to that event. That's going to be pretty difficult for new contests to overcome from past participants. In some cases it may be achievable but probably not many.
Also, I would suspect that the new contests will have to offer either better prizes or a better experience, or both, than NFFC or WCOFF offers to attract a following. This, if its the case, should raise potential red flags for participants. IF something appears to good to be true...it probably is.
Again, I sincerely hope ALL the new and existing contests are wildly successful; that would be great for players. But unless there are hundreds of "closet" high stake FF players that some how magically appear this year, I can't see how this is going to happen.

These firms consist of (with annual revenues and # of employees):
(1) Pricewaterhouse Coopers ($25.2 billion; 146,700)
(2) Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu ($23.1 billion; 150,000)
(3) Ernst & Young ($21.1 billion; 130,000)
(4) KPMG ($19.8 billion; 123,000)
The 5th and 6th largest are:
(5) BDO International ($3.9 billion; 30,000)
(6) Grant Thornton ($2.9 billion; 25,000)
Using this data, it's pretty easy to see that Numbers 5 and 6 don't belong with Numbers 1 through 4.
My point? Greg is being too kind. To put any new contest on the same level as WCOFF (year 7) or the NFFC/NBC (year 5) is beyond ludicrous. Yes, every business has to start somewhere, but let these contests run a couple of years before putting them in the same category.

Actually, I prompted David to check out the boards today with a phone call that led to a Fisher signup for the Las Vegas main event today. Add the Fishers to the fun in Las Vegas!! Oh, and get ready for our plans for Friday night in Sin City as well.

Fi$her, you're killing me with that post. The worst part is that I'm gullable enough to think that maybe it was going to turn into a fantasy football commercial. But once he came out of the closet (literally), I knew what was up for sure.

Your saying besides FFPC, there are two new start up High Stake Fantasy Football Leagues for this Year? WOW. With the fall of the AFFL...that opened up room for a contest of that size...(There are at least 4 companies trying to fill that void...including the NBC league, the FFPC, and the two mystery leagues)...unless the "screwing" turned the past AFFL players off completely to high stakes fantasy football (HSFF)...then the void would be smaller. (Removing cross over players who played WCOFF or NFFC as well as AFFL...because those players will likely keep the faith.)
Remember...even a year ago...the free market for creating these types of contests were still fearful of having to throw away $50,000 grand or so to avoid being sued.
With the CDM case winning...it has opened up the market now without having to dance through hoops and coughing up money for silly licensing agreements.
