James, thanks for the post. But if everything is based on number of entries, then why are you advertising the $100,000 grand prize? It's not $100,000 unless you hit 408 teams. Again, I would love to be able to do run a contest your way as you are guaranteed a profit while still advertising a grand prize that can only be reached by maximizing your signups. As long as your legal counsel says that's legit, then best of luck to you.
Our contest has received the same legal counsel as the WCOFF and other high-stakes games from Bill Heberer. Two options: 1) Play it out with the guaranteed prizes you've stated in your advertising; or 2) Refund everyone's money. At that point you resolicit everyone again to see if they will play for a restructed prize pool. That is a tough option, so in baseball we did the right thing and stayed with the prize structure even though we failed to attract 300 teams and I can tell you we didn't make money. But we built trust in us and right now our guys are having a great time and I think we'll reach 300 teams in 2005.
You and I don't need to discuss this further here and I wish you good luck. But I felt it did need pointing out since you responded here that our prize payouts are totally different and that when I advertise a $200,000 grand prize it's much different than you advertising a $100,000 grand prize based on the number of signups. That's just a fact.

According to Michael Soto, poker room director at Binion's (800-622-6468) the house costs for a tournament is about $15/person for the house rake and then to pay the dealers.. he said we should figure about $20 per person for house cut when you factor in dealer's pay. At 150 people playing, that should be 20x150-$3,000 for Binion's on a $200 buy in tourney. Toss in $500 in tips to the dealers for doing a great job... make it $3,500?
Obviously with $179, you would think less cost, not more... otherwise you might want to consider raising your prices so everyone gets more (...??...)
Now, I don't question it's difficult to schedule a poker room... he has no openings at Binion's Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday for that weekend.
Even still, you collect $26,850, pay out $18,200 (used to be $17,000) in cash prizes... toss $3,500 to Binions for costs... pay for the shuttle bus $900 (??), make it $1,000 of Kahuna items for promos... there's still over $3,000 left. Now... please do not misunderstand me - I have no problem with you making $3,000 to run the event (not counting the value of the promos) I had to wait on hold for 4 minutes to talk to Michael Soto... but had the space been available I'm guessing I would have invested less than 20 minutes in scheduling it. Not sure what process you went through - but I was amazed at how easy it was.
You didn't have to give me any of that information... I appreciate the fact that you did. I have no objection to your or Bill Gates or Krause making some money when it's possible. But why dirty up the facts when you present them?
I'm sorry James - I'm having trouble here and it's likely my ignorance and grumpy demeanor...
You say you've had 50-100 people live drafting in Vegas for the last 6 yrs... but only 82 signed up so far? I'm thinking if I started with 75 returning gamers from last year... well, nevermind.
I'm sure you have your own stress with the event you're trying to put on. When it's all said and done, there is a huge demand for fantasy games. There's a huge risk and profit for those willing to venture it.
I hope you prosper - and prosper honestly and openly.
Good luck to you and your contest,
Dave

Dave, I should have you renegotiate with Binion's for me because I would love to have only paid $20 per person which would shave another $25 off the fee.
Anyway, good luck to all of you with your fantasy football teams and events.
Take care.

Dyv, your little tirades are indeed becoming tiresome.
If you don't like the product, terms or cost of a product/service, then don't buy it. Do you write letters to Sony when you find JVC products that are similar but cheaper?
Personally, I have the utmost respect and admiration for people who have the cajones to start a business of any kind. Pricing is always difficult...charge too much and you get no customers, charge too little and you are giving away your effort. Those are business decisions made everyday.
So just call or fold, but don't question somebody's right to set the size of his bet.

Oh ya, if you don't like Dyv's tirades, DON'T READ THEM. Pretty damn simple. Thanks.

Is my "weekend warrior" prep better than your prep?

So just call or fold, but don't question somebody's right to set the size of his bet. First of all - I'm saddened my fan club has lost one of it's key members... those of us remaining will struggle on. Thanks for your time and hard work on my 'Executive Board of Special People' - you'll be missed.
Second, I have no relationship with Sony or JVC. I don't write pet stores when turtles end up available on ponds and complain that they charge. I also don't understand why helium balloons cost so much. None of that seems to matter - and it's as on topic as your point, I'm afraid. I have nothing to do with the electronics industry - but if I were making products and had a concern over one of the other people in my business I would certainly write and point it out.
I am, however, a fantasy gamer... thus my interest, curiousity and dedication. I can only assume you've never been part of something you care about - carry on with bliss and don't question anyone - good luck, etc.
Third, there are good businesses and bad ones. To deny that would be utterly ridiculous. Your blanket support of all businesses of any kind makes me wonder if you were careless or drunk when you typed that? You can't possibly mean it.
And finally...
Eugene O’Neill :: Censorship of anything, at any time, in any place, on whatever pretense, has always been and will always be the last resort of the boob and the bigot.
I appreciate your permission to have an opinion.

Dyv,
I would have no problem with your concerns about the misleading claims concerning the fantasy game.
Most of your post, however, was concerned with the rake for the poker tournament.
The casual observer would come to the conclusion you had a personal stake in the discussion, and were not just making an observation.
As for you Gekko, feel free to not read my posts. Anybody afraid to identify what team they are managing is a total non-entity as far as I'm concerned.

The best way for someone like me to make a statement about what contest is better is by paying for it. I payed for the NFFC! As far as poker who cares! You can play poker anywhere at any time for big money. Even in Utah. You just have to look.
