Looking For Feedback On Extended FAAB Period
Okay, this really isn't a rule proposal, but certainly a rule discussion. Please provide some feedback here pro and con and let's see if we can have an intelligent discussion on the subject.
Right now we are writing our NFFC Cutline Championship rules and those will be unveiled next week and the signups will begin in early July. One of the items that we will include in the Cutline Championship will be an extended FAAB period with a first-come, first-served $1 FAAB cost for anyone you pick up after FAAB runs on Thursday's. FAAB runs normally for all teams once a week in the Cutline Championship and then the available free agents after that are open season until the first kickoff that weekend.
This is something that has been discussed in the NFFC in the past and it was especially discussed two years ago when a hurricane blew through the Gulf Coast during Week 2 and cancelled the Houston-Baltimore game. NFFC owners had no recourse that weekend with their kickers, defenses and even some specialty players. Our rules currently allow one FAAB on Friday nights and nothing after that.
Okay, so for discussion purposes here: Would an extended free agent pickup period after FAAB has already run be a good rule change or a bad one? Why or why not? It is something to consider for some of our events, or does it make sense for all of our events?
I'm interested in feedback because I do see pros and cons either way. Thanks all.

I'm not in favor of extending FAAB beyond once per week.
1. I seriously doubt that most owners who were affected by the hurricane carried a second kicker or TE or DST or whatever; rather, they likely concsiously chose to draft their team w/ more fliers at other positions. Then during the season, maybe they also cling to their "sure-to-breakout-soon" bench players instead of acquiring backups at all positions. With that approach comes risk. Why reward it? Those who were more conservative and backed up all positions probably had no issue w/ the hurricane - beyond having to endure the rampant message board whining!
2. If you take the approach of keeping one auction near the end of the week and after that allow a free-for-all, it becomes a matter of who is chained to a computer all day catching the news the fastest and scooping the newly-ordained improved players. That hardly seems fair to those who are not at a computer or internet-equipped cell phone all day. (Personally, I do have computer access all day, but I still think it's too much to ask.)
3. If you instead choose to just have a second auction period on, say Sat. evenings or Sunday mornings, then it just puts a lot more work on everyone to go review who got dropped in the first FAAB of the week and is now available, when in all likelihood, they already got who they went after. Seems like an awful lot of work for the VERY rare case of a hurricane or something similar affecting starting rosters.
4. Also, as it is now w/ just one FAAB per week, players that are dropped are not available until the following week. If we make those players available later in the week (either via free-for-all or another auction), then won't that make it MUCH easier for teams to acquire players because "one man's junk is another man's treasure"? I mean, right now, if you don't bid enough on a player you want or you don't put in enough bids for others, etc., you get shutout of FAs that week. Good! This would just bail out too many weak teams and make it easier for them to recover, IMO.
I vote to leave it as is.

I can see the advantages of a first come, first serve system after the FA deadline passes, such as in your hurricane example, but overall I don't like it.
It creates a bit of an uneven playing field. As it stands now, everyone has all week to determine their FA pickups/bids, and to have those in by the deadline. This is largely independent of job hours, family obligations, computer access, and smartphone addiction. Everyone has equal opportunity to obtain Free Agents in an even-handed way.
An "open season" after the FA deadline creates a situation where those who, for example, live at their computers, don't work weekends, don't care about spending time with families, don't attend church on Sunday, and who don't attend live NFL games have a potential advantage over those who do.
Is it really fair that if, on a Saturday night before an NFL game, when someone is working at their job or is spending quality time with their family(no phone/TV/computer), and Steve Smith breaks his arm in a Flag Football game that they should be put at a competitive disadvantage?
Some might say that it's not a disadvantage, because everyone has the choice to actually have a life or not. I guess that's true, but I choose to have a life.
I think the rules should be written such that the NFFC has the authority to open the FA process after the deadline UNDER SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES, such as the hurricane you mentioned.
There's too much on the line in these high-stakes leagues for outcomes to be determined by who gets to their computers first.

I like FCFS for a shallow lge (10 tms) like the cutline championship because it allows for an earlier FAAB time which doesn't conflict with NFFC.
For NFFC lges, I don't think its a good idea.
Unlike a 10-team lge, an NFFC waiver pool has marginal talent and an injury can create huge incremental value for these players. In a 10-teamer there are always starters available - a backup claiming a job is much less a game-changer since everyone should have a strong bench to begin with.

Like KJ, I wouldn't want it for the 12 or 14 team NFFC leagues, but for a 10 team league I would be for it.

I am with the first few posts on this one.My work schedule makes it tough enough to get online and compete for free agents once a week during the season. This is purely selfish on my part,as i know that on a first come, first serve type format i will lose out most weeks.

Vote No.
It would look too much like the FFOC which is NOT something I want to be reminded of

Personally, I wouldn't compete in ANY contest that had a FCFS free agent component. Since I'm not a Borg, I actually function when not attached to my computer.
Why play in a league where I'd be at a competitive disadvantage? It's an exclusion criteria for me. If it's instituted in the Cutline, I will not enter that contest.
But that's just me. I can see how it wouldn't bother other people. I have no problem with you doing what you think is best for your contest, period.
