Defensive Scoring Points: Are They Fair

Facts on other scoring systems:

ANT
shutout = 10
2-6 = 8
7-10 = 6
11-14 = 4
15-19 = 2

Fantasy Jungle
shutout = 15
2-10 = 10
11-17 = 5

Sportsline*
0-6 = 8
7-13 = 6
14-20 = 4
21-27 = 2
* sportsline also awards up to 12 addl pts based on net yds allowed

WCOFF
shutout = 6
1-5 = 2
6-10 = 1

Greg, I'd say from this the NFFC is middle of the pack compared to other popular high stakes games for D scoring.

Also, with regards to WCOFF, why even bother drafting a defense? ... is that where this "a defense shouldn't mean anything attitude comes from"?

I keep seeing people complaining about the idea of having some fantasy owners make the personal choice to roll the dice and take a defense as high as the 5th or 6th round. Why is this bad? I would say it would be boring if everyone just took a random defense with their last pick or two.

I am always looking to remove some of the luck factor of fantasy football. We are having this discussion now because the Bears defense is carrying a few teams and scoring on a record breaking level. I think defensive production should be a part of fantasy football and credit should be given to a savvy owner who projected a certain defense to be good. If he has the guts to take that defense early enough to get he should reap the benefits of a good choice.

However It will be a risk reward thing. Some owners will take a defense (something hard to predict) early and miss out on WR or RB depth because of it. Other owners will snatch up the better WR or RB left over. It goes both ways.

The only thing I wonder about is if maybe special teams play should be eliminated from defensive scoring. The Bears "defense" had nothing to do with that punt return. Maybe we keep it at what the DEFENSE does?

I would like to see a defense matter to the point people would consider drafting one by the 7th or 8th round or you can choose to wait and your strategy can be to gobble up WR and RB depth while others take shots on those unpredictable defenses.

Renman, special teams counts for defensive scoring in every lge I've ever played in. It's part of the NFL game, why exclude it?

I think at any position, the best will be drafted early. Worth it or not Peyton Manning is going to be drafted early...did you have this discussion a few years back when Peyton was throwing for 49 TD's? (maybe you did because the NFFC awards 6 pts for TD, while some leagues only give 4 pts). I guess my point is that there are only so many elite players at the skill positions and I like that D/ST's can't be overlooked when drafting. Well said.

If you're going to reward points for holding teams up to 17, why not then start to subtract points as the total gradually gets higher?

I'm also in a minority (I suppose) that thinks kickoff and punt return TD's (not yardage) should be awarded to the individual player.

I know special teams counts. I know special teams have always counted with defenses (at least for as long as I have played fantasy football.) I am not even saying I want it out. I was just brainstorming ideas as punt returns are so random and impossible to predict so anytime someone benefits from or is hurt by one in a fantasy game it feels like 100% good or bad LUCK.

Holding a team to 13-17 is still worth something. Most NFL teams would take that any day.

What about what happened to the Cardinals on Monday night? The Defense only gave up 3 points, the offense and special teams gave up the rest. Thats why scoring for 13-17 isn't so bad, not all of those are always given up by the defense.

Great point. Which defense played a better game Monday night? The Cards or Bears?

Cards -14
Bears - 23

Maybe more influence should be put on how the actual defense performs? Is there a way to eliminate when a team gives up points through its offense and not defense? Do we give points to yards allowed rather the points allowed? Who knows?

Commercially, ST were not part of D score util the net arrived.

Hall and Bush (and others) return kicks because of THEIR ability to do so.

At the end of the day, I'm ok with combined. It's not that big of a deal.
