NFFC Unveils First Auction Championship

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Mon May 03, 2010 11:36 am

After six years of hosting private auction leagues, the NFFC will unveil the industry's first national auction championship with a guaranteed $10,000 grand prize. Auction Championships will be offered on Friday, Sept. 3rd at two separate times in Las Vegas, New York and Chicago and will consist of 14-team leagues. League prizes and overall prizes will be awarded.

The format is still being tweaked by Tom and myself and we are interested in feedback from NFFC members. In the past, the NFFC held league head-to-head playoffs, but the national contest is better suited to a total points playoff format in Weeks 14-16 like we use in the main event. We have created the rules for the NFFC Auction Championship to feature both league and overall total points playoffs in Weeks 14-16.

We are interested in your feedback on:
a) total points in the playoffs
b) league playoffs: Are they needed after Week 13?
c) 6 teams or 4 teams from each league into the Championship Round?

Here's a look at our tentative rules and again we are asking for your feedback. Cost is $800 per team and one team could win as much as $4,200 per league and $10,000 overall.

OFFICIAL CONSTITUTION OF THE NATIONAL
FANTASY FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP AUCTION LEAGUES

1. Overview: The National Fantasy Football Championship Auction Leagues will consist of 14 teams, with each team compiling 19 NFL players using an imaginary $200 team budget. Teams will play every other team in their league once in head-to-head competition, with the team with the best overall record winning an $850 prize and the team with the most total points during the regular season also winning $850. One team can win both prizes if they accomplish both achievements. Tie-breakers for the head-to-head title is total points. The top six teams according to the criteria below after Week 13 advance to the Championship Round. The Championship Round will be held Week 14 through Week 16. Teams will carry their weekly scoring average from the first 13 weeks of competition (i.e. 130.15 points) into the playoffs and then add their point totals from Weeks 14, 15 and 16 to that initial total to determine the league champion. Non-playoff teams will compete in the Consolation Round under the same scoring format (weekly scoring average + scores from Weeks 14-16). All Championship Round Auction teams will also be pooled together in an overall race for additional prize money including a guaranteed $10,000 grand prize. The highest scoring team in the Championship Round after Week 16 wins the grand prize.

Championship Round qualifiers from each league include:
Seed #1: Most total points
Seed #2: Best h2h record (not counting total points)
Seed #3: Next most total points
Seed #4: Next most total points
Seed #5: Next best h2h record
Seed #6: Next best h2h record (tie-breaker is total points)

2. Draft: All Auction Leagues will hold their auctions on Friday, Sept. 3rd in their respective cities. The order of each league auction will be chosen randomly by Fanball and announced before draft day. Player nominations will begin with Team #1 and go in order through Team #14. Team #1 will start out each round through all 19 rounds. Each team will nominate a player in each round and provide an opening bid for that player. A team cannot present an opening bid that is higher than its remaining budget as it must have money remaining for all 19 players. The bidding continues until the auctioneer determines that a winning bid has been determined. All winning bids are final according to the auctioneer. Each team must have a maximum and minimum total of 19 players on its roster at all times.

The bidding process is open after the initial introduction of the player and all team owners may bid at any time. Bids are made in $1 increments (no cents) and the auctioneer determines the winning bid each time. The auctioneer will state, "going once…going twice….SOLD." Once the auctioneer starts to say "SOLD" the bidding is completed.

3. Prizes:
The NFFC Auction Championship now has league and overall prizes. They are as follows:
Overall Prizes
First Place = $10,000
Second Place = $3,000
Third Place = $2,000
Fourth Place = $1,500
Fifth Place = $850
Sixth Place = $750
Seventh Place = $650

League Prizes in Championship Round:
First Place = $2,700
Second Place = $1,350
Third Place = $550
Regular Season Head-to-Head Champion: $850
Regular Season Total Points Champion: $850

4. No Trading: Trading is not allowed during the NFFC season and owners are not allowed to trade draft picks.

5. Roster Requirements: Maximum of 19 players at all times.

6. Starting Lineup Requirements:
Starting lineups will consist of:
• 1 Quarterback
• 2 Running Backs
• 3 Wide Receivers
• 1 Tight End
• 1 Flex Player (RB, WR or TE)
• 1 Kicker
• 1 Team Defense/Specials Team
(If no Week One lineup is submitted, the NFFC will determine your starting lineup. After Week One, if no starting lineup is submitted, your starting lineup will be that of the previous week.)

7. Scoring: Players can accumulate points in a number of ways:
PASSING:
• .05 points for every yard passing (works out to 1 point every 20 yards).
• 6 points for every passing touchdown
• 2 points for every 2-Point conversion
• minus 1 point for every interception and lost fumble
RUSHING:
• .10 points for every yard rushing (works out to 1 point every 10 yards).
• 6 points for every rushing TD
• 2 points for every 2-Point conversion
• minus 1 point for every lost fumble
• 6 points for a recovered offensive fumble for a touchdown (RB, QB, WR, TE)
RECEIVING:
• .10 points for every yard receiving (works out to 1 point every 10 yards).
• 6 points for every receiving TD
• 1 point for every reception for WRs, Tight Ends and QBs
• 0.5 points for every reception for RBs
• 2 points for every 2-Point conversion
• minus 1 point for every lost fumble
KICKING:
• 1 point for every extra point
• 3 points for every field goal from 1-30 yards
• 3 points for every field goal plus .10 points for every yard after 30 yards (i.e. a 47-yard field goal would be worth 4.7 points)
DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS:
• 1 point for every sack
• 2 points for every interception or opponents' fumble recovery
• 6 points for every touchdown (interception return, defensive fumble return, punt or kickoff return, blocked field goal return, blocked punt return). All special teams and defensive points are awarded to the team responsible, not the individual player. Should a kicker, punter or field goal holder throw a pass off a fake attempt, however, the offensive output for that offensive play would go towards the individual player, not the specials team. Also, any lost fumble or “muff” on a specials team play does not result in negative points for that individual player.
• 2 points for every safety
• 12 points for a shutout by the entire team
• 8 points for allowing 2-7 points by the entire team
• 4 points for allowing 8-12 points by the entire team
• 2 points for allowing 13-17 points by the entire team

Thoughts?

Just so I am reading it correctly...

so there is no way one single player could do 2 auctions and one DC (or vice versa) since the times correspond with each other, and it is only on Friday?

I would like to do a trifecta of these (2 auctions and 1 DC). Any chance we could get an alternate date for each of these other than Friday?

Sunday perhaps??

Just trying to build this up to what it is capable of IMO.

Good stuff!!! :D

Good stuff!!! :D Yes, I think I did put in the rules that we are offering these on Sunday too, but I didn't say anything here. We aren't securing space just yet for all three of those cities on Sunday until we see if demand is there, but it's easy to do in each city. So yes, we can do Sundays if the demand is there. We want seven leagues for both of these formats and if we add one more on Sunday in a spot where there is demand, count me in!! :D

a) Make it total points PERIOD for the overall prizes. Meaning you go into week 14 with your points scored for the season (not average), and whoever has the most points after week 16 is the winner!

b) Yes, they are needed. You would still play the H2H as usual, but overall points would determine overall prizes.

c) I vote for 4 to get in the championship round from each league (2 best record, 2 most points). However, if we could 6 for the individual league playoffs (as it always has been), I think that would be best.

Thanks!

Thanks! I thought there was a thread at the end of last NFFC season that asked for h2h in the league playoffs to be eliminated. That's why I was asking. I thought the sentiment was that total points should play out in the auction championship like it does in the overall. So you are suggesting that we do that for the overall prizes but still keep the league playoffs the way we had it before?

If you go with 4, I would make sure that the 2nd & 3rd place teams in points go the championship round, rather than the 2nd & 3rd best records (current 5th & 6th seeds). The 4 who advance would be: (1) top head to head, (2) 1st in points, (3) 2nd in points, (4) 3rd in points (current top 4 seeds). The top 3 in points should be guaranteed to advance.

Could be harsh if you wind up in a tough league, have the 3rd highest total points, and don't make it because you were unlucky in head-to-head.
