NFFC Unveils First Auction Championship
Simply put, I would not play in an Auction Championship that carried straight points. The
average should suffice and offer adequate reward
for regular season since:
-The "Championship" winner could be a foregone conclusion before the week 14-16 "competition" even begins. Why not let the best 28 out of 98 have it out over the the big prize? Why crown a "champion" who has mastered nothing more than the 13 others in his/her league?
-We will of course, be facing varying degrees of regular season competition. Some cities may have stronger owners and some leagues a higher percentage of deadbeat owners. Collusion could even seep into the equation (in the area of Free Agency).
-Need for consistency with the NFFC's Main Event
rules. Perhaps the AVERAGE X 2 COULD BE THE NORMAL CARRYOVER for both these National championships..... as I toss out a compromise.
I agree 100% with the other recs made and agreed to by Waz,GK,Jules.

Greg,
I personally I would like for the auction format to be consistent with the nffc main event for determing league champs and and overall winner. I totally hate the H2H format for a league winner. Let's do it like it's done in the main.

Totally different views by just a handful of owners. Interesting. Keep the opinions coming and I'll finalize this format shortly. I agree on a couple of points made here already.

c) I vote for 4 to get in the championship round from each league (2 best record, 2 most points). However, if we could 6 for the individual league playoffs (as it always has been), I think that would be best.
Thanks! I thought there was a thread at the end of last NFFC season that asked for h2h in the league playoffs to be eliminated. That's why I was asking. I thought the sentiment was that total points should play out in the auction championship like it does in the overall. So you are suggesting that we do that for the overall prizes but still keep the league playoffs the way we had it before? [/QUOTE]Greg,
You remember it correctly ... there is a large contingent that felt the auction was the purest form of drafting players and didn't understand why the purest format had a playoff system that had the MOST amount of LUCK for the league championship at the end. Why have the league with the MOST control over your draft ... have a 6 team luck feast at the end.
Of course, you also have a group that will say the will not enter if it requires a that you have a really good team to qualify to make the "Championship" round. If you do let 4 or 6 teams from each league in the finals ... I think you need to call it the "Slightly Above Average" round (to be fair)
IMO ... At worst ... you should make it like the main event with a two team playoff if necessary.
It's an overall title. All league champions and top 10% in points should make the finals (hence the CHAMPIONship round (Or you could always make bad players happy and let the top 12 teams in each league in so everyone has a chance at the big money and title ... why penalized and exclude people just because that drafted bad teams or had bad lucky for 13 weeks? Surely they have a RIGHT to get lucky the last three weeks of the season to be awarded the championship title! Right?).
I also like that you can carry all your points, or at minimum 2X your average points for the overall champion.
For those that want to get lucky at the end ... maybe you could have a separate league (call it the "Auction Luck Feast" league) where you can have 12 teams make the playoffs and let them have a 4 week playoff run off for all the money (maybe you could let all 14 teams in and just forgo the regular season.
I guess you can tell by my sarcasm ... I'm pretty much on the fence on how much you let people luck out in the end to win the money that should go to the real champions of the leagues IMHO. I just don't understand the watering down, include everyone mentality. It's a CONTEST, may the BEST team win (not a slightly above average one).

I agree with Big Mike.
This isn't "1st grade field day" where we all should get participation ribbons!
This is a COMPETITION where the BEST teams should be rewarded, not let anyone known to man in a championship so a team who is clearly inferior has a chance at winning the grand prize!
Honestly, I am not as adamant as to how the league playoffs are set up (I would be fine with points rather than H2H), but PLEASE make the playoffs about points, and the teams who scored more over 13 weeks need more of an advantage than a measely "weekly average". We already do that in the Main, so make this contest a bit different.
My biggest concern of all is how I can squeeze (2) auction championships, 1 DC championship, AND a Super in the same weekend???
Any possibility of this happening???

As someone considering getting back into the auction league this year, considering my success the two years I played, here is what I would change to this proposal:
1) League playoffs consist of top 3 teams, top 2 total points and top H2H determined by total points in Weeks 14 - 16, no starting average since you are already paying the top point team and H2H team for their regular season success. You are only paying 3 places so if you are going to have the top 6 teams in the playoffs you might as well let the whole league play in the playoffs.
2) These 3 teams go to the Championship Round. You only have 3 for the Main Events so why are you bloating this league out with 6.
3) Pay only top 5 and put more money in 1st and 2nd place.

- ok, my opinion is this:
leave the league and league championship the way it was.. period.
in terms of overall championship.. take from the WHOLE pool of teams PERIOD everyone from week 1 till the end and the top scoring teams 7 down get paid.. the overall should have nothing to do with the league championship and leagues.
That is the purest form.. you have a league that has head to head and points.. alot of fun , then for the purists you have an overall chance to win championship.
this keeps even teams out of the playoffs involved.. Mike Weber

If I am reading your proposal correctly, you are saying that the top 7 overall winners would be whomever scores the most points from week 1 to week 16?
While I highly doubt what you proposed will happen, it is pretty much the same as I proposed earlier, except I limited the number of teams that would get in the championship round.
Honestly, if it was a choice between your proposal and allowing 204 teams for each league, and everyone getting "reset" to our weekly average, I would vote for your proposal everytime!
I am all about making this a total points contest (with H2H stuff in individual leagues as we both proposed).
I'm NOT interested in "who can get hot" for the final 3 weeks of the season. We already do that in the Main event....LET'S MAKE THIS DIFFERENT!!!!

I like the national auction format.
I would be fine with 3 or 4 per league + overall wild cards (top 10%?) advancing to the national playoffs, similar to the other events.
If we expand to Sunday as well as Friday for the same national contest, I would have concerns over the potential for leagues to be auctioned with different information. If a star player goes down for the season on Saturday, the person who bought that player on Friday is screwed and the person who bought his backup for $1 is happy. The leagues on Sunday would have different information and shouldn't directly compete with those that went off on Friday. That's why we do the Saturday leagues simultaneously regardless of city.
I like the idea of carrying 2x your regular season average into the playoffs. Carrying only 1x your average into the playoffs seems to water down the success a team had in the regular season. I would actually be for the 2x change for the main event and classic as well. Last year we went into the main event playoffs in 2nd place overall, had 3 average to above average weeks, nothing special but decent, but we fell all the way to 15th or 17th or somewhere around there and out of the money. I guess I should figure if the change to 2x avg would have kept us in the money, I'm not sure, but either way I'm still for the change.

Never did an auction. It seems you pick 19 players with no roster changes via free agency. Is that right? How long does an average draft last?
Thanks
