2012 Thursday Games

I think you have to have either 2 full faa periods or just one on friday. The faa of just using just the people in Thursdays game does not fit. When I bid I usually have more than one person in each bid. Call them A, B, C and just want to drop X. If say player B or C is in Thursday game and you only bid on thursdays players it creates a big problem. Do you go overboard on your second or third pick and then find out your bid would have got your best pick if you could have put in a full bid. Or bid lower and then get shut out on Friday when you would have gotten one of them if you could have bid on them all at once.
when you figure out there is no way to figure it out your almost there

The prepared owners should do very well with this arrangement, but the masses will likely be none-too-pleased. Do you think that will be the case, Glenn? I'm not so sure. This is a pretty standard setup for a lot of leagues. You have one primary WW day and then you''re able to subsequently make pickups after that. I've played on a lot of CBS Sports.com leagues over the years and that's similar to how they are all set up. We would be reducing it to one day instead of having it open until Sunday.

Plus, Greg and I received a lot of emails from first-time players this year asking if they could make subsequent pickups after the initial WW period had passed. Many of them said this is how they typically played in their leagues. So I think we'll be OK with the learning curve if we explain everything thoroughly.
This is uncharted territory here, Tom. With such an early initial deadline, almost all the available players will be gone by Wednesday. I have to believe that the second deadline (Fri/Sat) will be hardly used at all.
I wouldn't necessarily call this uncharted territory. 900 Main Event players per year utilized this FAAB format during weeks with Thursday games at the WCOFF.

Interesting that during my time there, I don't recall one message board thread, or even post, complaining about the additional time or work necessary for the dual waiver periods, let alone any statements that the practice caused them to reduce leagues.

To me this is a no-brainer. Reduce luck, reduce arbitrary deadlines, increase management flexibility and control over our teams, limited or no additional effort required.

The only negative that I've seen referenced here that has obvious validity is the one offered by Wayne regarding the quick turnaround necessary to perform all the work necessary for a full FAAB on Wednesday. However, opening up the waiver page on Mondays would help offset that and the increased control is worth it.

If the all out FAAB on Wednesday and Friday "sloppy seconds" is used, then I would like to make a suggestion.

Could we have it so we could at least put in players for Wednesday night starting on MONDAY morning???

Often I would notice I needed a kicker, defense, was thin at WR, etc. and had the opportunity to scan through some things on Monday or during the game that night, but couldn't do anything, because everything was locked till Tuesday morning.

It would be nice to have this available more than just 36 hours in advance.

It would be nice to have this available more than just 36 hours in advance. This is something I'd definitely like to address with our IT team. Obviously we let the full week of games end before opening up the free agent pool for the next week, but I'll ask now if maybe that listing of available free agents not only could be viewable on Monday but maybe even earlier than that. I mean, once Friday's FAAB is done, the next free agent pool is set in stone no matter what happens in the games, right? Let's see what options there could be for FAAB being opened as soon as possible or at least viewable as soon as possible.

Would that help?

Could you run full FAAB each Wednesday night for all 32 teams and then have a Friday night or even Saturday FAAB for all remaining non-picked up free agents? Basically it's a fallback FAAB for anyone who missed a kicker or a D/ST or maybe even an RB who was declared a late starter after an injury at practice on Friday. Yes, it's more work, but we're trying to find the best solution.

Would this be too much for owners or a perfect fallback solution?

So again: FAAB every Wednesday at 9 or 10 pm EST

2nd FAAB every Friday night or even Saturday for all remaining free agents in your league who weren't picked up the first time. No players cut from Wednesday would be added to this player pool.

This actually makes sense. Thoughts? This is an acceptable option in my opinion. It is not too far behind having just the Wednesday one as an option for me. The key is having everyone available Wednesday for me. Having just Thursday players available Wednesday would create a situation where you basically have to do full fledged waivers twice as you have to compare the whole pool two times. This way is much more logical and reasonable in my view. I would still vote not to have Friday. I would rather be unlucky on a team or two here and there like I was with Carpenter this year than deal with another wire Friday, but this WCOFF method(that word makes me puke, btw) does not leave much to be done on the 2nd wire on your average week, and in any event does not result in entering too many guys on the software another time. Can be done quickly enough that I wouldn't consider it enough of a burden to have to reduce team counts etc.

One benefit of this WCOFF style arrangement that makes the slight bit of extra hassle Friday lessened is the fact that when you have a kicker or defense on BYE, you feel like you have got to put in about 10-12 of them to make damn sure you get one. You now don't have to waste all that time the first go around. See if you get one of your four or five for a buck. If not, then you go through that more thorough process Friday. That time savings adds up for some players.

Also feel like it would be a good idea to back the deadline up to late Wednesday night so there is a little more time for everyone to get done what they need to. A few might have to wake up early before work to set lineups, but I think more would benefit from the extra time. Especially the west coasters.

Greg,

I think that regardless of which route we go it makes sense to be able to start the waiver process earlier. I see no reason why we couldn't roll with Billy's idea of putting in bids on Monday - not just viewing who is available. I can't think of any reason anybody would be against doing this. If nothing else we can get kickers and defenses in.

I really must be one of the guppies here as I honestly don't have enough information to make waiver wire decisions on Wednesday. Every week I put in waiver wire bids early on and every week I end up drastically changing them based on the news. Maybe I"m just not astute enough to do them on Wednesdays. (That's probably a given.) But for me I it seems like every week I have to change things up in my bids on Friday due to news coming out.

So now in my opinion we will be left with having to educated guesses as opposed to educated decision - unless of course you are someone with some kind of inside information..... So we are going to take away our ability to make decisions based on better information (Friday) for 30 teams on the off chance that somebody doesn't play for us the following Thursday due to an injury???? I just don't get it.

And when the news does come out on Friday, then I have to go through every league again to see if the players who might now play are available in any of my leagues. Hence another full wavier wire search. No thanks.

Some have said here that our current system has been fine with Thursday night games. But if you think about it, the most important wavier wire decisions come early on. But the time we have had Thursday night games most of our wavier work is done.

For all of you who say they don't like Friday waivers. Have you been putting in bids early in the week and then leaving them alone of do you alter them sometimes on Fridays? I change mine up all of the time. (And yes I've already said that I'm not that astute.) But now I have to made guesses without injury reports on Tuesday nights as to who I'm getting for next Sunday's games? Wow. I'm not home on Wednesday until 9"30 eastern so it's all about Tuesday for me.

Greg and Tom - you gotta do what you feel is best. I understand that and it won't be a problem. I'm cutting back on managed leagues regardless as I can't effectively manage what I had this year. And I"m definitely up for a lot of DC's. But anyways I'm glad that I don't have to make this call.

Excellent post Wayne. By the time the thursday games have rolled around the past few years I had pretty much spent and done most of my waiver wire work already for the season. Free agency is especially crucial for those bye weeks and I really like having as much information as possible such as friday practice reports and injury updates.

I think the best solution is wednesday pickups for only thursday night players and then a full free agency for the other 30 teams on friday. Like Wayne said it will be interesting to see which high stakes contest makes a decision first. It wouldn't suprise me at all if both contests end up having a different free agency policy this year.
