Trendsetters 2012

Post by Ted's Cracked Head » Tue Feb 07, 2012 5:23 pm

The Trendsetters have been drafting since the SB clock ran out. We are at the 3rd-4th round turn so I thought I would post my first 3 picks from the 12 spot.

This is an NFFC 14 team, 30 round DC with I think 5 phases of drafting. We are smack dab in the middle of the first phase which will run for 6 rounds.

We can draft rookies and do so by stating rookie #_ when it is our turn to draft. We have a supplemental draft after the NFL drafts and prior to the next scheduled phase to bring our rosters up to date. In round 3 today, Jack was the first owner to yell bingo, meaning he gets to pick first in the rookie draft.

Round 1
Ahead of me went: Foster, Rice, McCoy, Calvin, Rodgers, Brees, Brady, MJD, Forte, Andre Johnson and Ryan Mathews.

I was targeting either Brees or Rodgers but knew I had no hope of either with this group. I did not hesitate to select Gronkowski at 1-12. Can he repeat this past years performance? Won't teams adjust to the Patriots dynamic duo? Maybe but even with a 10% drop off, I think he is worthy of a late first or early second round pick. Graham too.

Round 2
Graham, Welker, Chris Johnson and Roddy get taken. None of the remaining RBs make me wet so I know I am going WR. I am looking at Fitz, Jennings and Nicks here. I choose Fitz because I know his targets and red zone opps will not drop and if anything, they may imporve this year. Either way, I couldn't really go wrong with any of them.

Round 3
I am hoping that Sproles makes it back to me because even though they have lots of mouths to feed in that backfield, I think he will continue to be a very important sparkplug for that offense. My hopes are dashed when he gets taken at 2-10.

There are numerous talented wrs on the board when it gets back to me but I know that most of them will be gone by the time I draft again at 4.12. Having said that, I am pleasantly surprised and at the same time, concerned that Jamaal Charles is still on the board. I have no choice but to go upside and add him to Gronk and Fitz.

Though we have 27 rounds to go and it is still the first week of February, I am happy with my start and even more happy to see the beginning of the 2012/13 FF season!

I'll share my thoughts on my first 3 rounds.

round 1
I had planned on starting with 2 Rb's from the 14 spot. Any combination of CJ,forte and MJD would have made me happy. Also strongly considered Newton. If this were a head to head and not a DC I would have taken him. Was a little surprised to see Welker there. I choose him at 1:14
Round 2
Chris johnson was there for me at 2:1 A lot of people have concerns about him but I'm hoping he comes into the season with a chip on his shoulder and once again becomes a dominant player.
Round 3
I choose Jordy Nelson at 3;1
lynch was tempting. As was bowe, maclin, and some others. But having the week to week blow up potential of Cj,welker, and nelson was the best choice for me.

Here's the results of the first 3 rounds:

Round one:

1. Arian Foster
2. Ray Rice
3. LeSean McCoy
4. Calvin Johnson
5. Aaron Rodgers
6. Drew Brees
7. Tom Brady
8. Maurice Jones Drew
9. Matt Forte
10. Andre Johnson
11. Ryan Mathews
12. Rob Gronkowski
13 Jimmy Graham
14. Wes Welker

Round two:

15.Chris Johnson
16.Roddy White
17.Larry Fitzgerald
18.Cam Newton
19.Brandon Marshall
20.Darren McFadden
21.Matthew Stafford
22.Hakeem Nicks
23.Greg Jennings
24.Darren Sproles
25.AJ Green
26.Victor Cruz
27.Mike Wallace
28.Michael Vick

Round three:

29.Jordy Nelson
30.Marques Colston
31.Jamaal Charles
32.Percy Harvin
33. Steve Smith
34.Steven Jackson
35.Julio Jones
36.Demarco Murray
37.Miles Austin
38.Rookie #1
39.Dwayne Bowe
40.Jeremy Maclin
41.Marshawn Lynch
42.Dez Bryant

I have slot #9 and my 3 picks were:

Pick 1.09 - Matt Forte: Easy pick; I have him ranked as RB #4 and #6 overall. So, would have taken him at 6 and was pleased to see him stiill there at 9.

Pick 2.06 - Darren McFadden - Certainly an injury risk, but when he plays he's been a 20+ ppg RB over the last couple years. We are using a full ppr this year, so that'll make RB's like McFadden who catch a lot of passes even more valuable.

Pick 3.06 - Steven Jackson - Last year in this scoring format Jackson was RB #10; he's getting a little long in the tooth, but I suspect Fisher will give him the ball around 25 times a game, much like he did with George and CJ2k in Tenn. With Jackson it's all about volume and as long as he stays healthy he'll get plenty.

So, 3 RB's with my first 3 picks....not necessarily the plan, but old school VBD called for it.

The major surprise to me in the first 3 rounds was Gronk and Graham going so early. This is NOT 1.5 ppr for TE's. And it seems whenever a player has a "crazy" good stat year they generally don't repeat it.Think Manning's 49 TD's, Brady's 50 TD's, R Moss's 23 TD's. Maybe Gronk and/or Graham will alter that trend.
The other quizzical thing was seeing 3 QB's go in the first 7 picks and then only 3 more through 42 picks. Kinda like Gronk and Graham owners, I guess the 3 owners picking QB's with picks 5, 6 and 7 are hoping for (expecting) a repeat.

I have pick 4 in the draft. First, I'll say i was not at all surprised with 3 QB's going in the first round in this draft. I was not surprised they went in the first seven picks. I had 3 RB's, Calvin and 3 QB's at the top of the list. Bear in mind, it is February, there's a lot of uncertainties in this draft. (Rule changes, schedules, etc...)

From the 4 slot, I was wondering if any of the big three RB's would make it to me. It wouldn't have surprised me at all if Calvin or Rodgers was taken in the top 3 picks. I was ready to start with one of the 3 RB's if he had made it to me. As it turned out, I was left with the decision of Calvin or a QB. I originally selected the 4 slot to take whatever was left from the RB's or Calvin. I stayed with my original plan.

1.4 Calvin
2.11 AJ Green
3.11 Dwayne Bowe

My intentions weren't to start WR, WR, WR, but I'm high on AJ this year and Bowe as the 18th WR off the board could be a good value pick. I think all three "CAN" put up WR1 numbers..I just have a lot of catching up to do at the other positions.

We have a separate Rookie draft immediately after the NFL draft. So whoever took Rookie 1 gets the first pick and so on. It's a great way to draft rookies before you know which team they are going to.

I had the first kds so I ended up with my first choice and took the third pick.

1.3 McCoy
2.12 Cruz
3.12 Maclin
4.3 Stevie Johnson

I'm happy with this start. Not a lot of risk here and I have 4 players that literally could catch 80+ balls apiece. Since we are PPR this year I felt good about taking McCoy at 3rd.

The QB run has been brutal. I hate chasing but we'll see what happens. It's so much fun drafting when there is literally nothing to go by.
