Good strategy games to play with the kids
As the kids get older(8-13) introduce them to RISK. Not only a great stragety game, but a good teacher of geography and history.

Chess or Risk
Is my "weekend warrior" prep better than your prep?

Risk is my vote, and I agree with Appleman... it also teaches Geography.
As a teacher, I can tell you that MANY 7th and 8th graders think Africa is a country.
Maybe they heard it from Palin?

It's great to teach kids Geography...from the Napoleonic-era!

Interesting side note to this thread. I forgot about this until I started thinking about Risk.
At a garage sale about 15 years ago, I found a very old version of the game of Risk. I just found it stored away in my basement. It is pretty cool. The instruction booklet says "copyright 1959". The board is in extremely good condition, and every piece is there. Even the cards are nearly perfect.
So, I don't need to buy Risk, and we get to enjoy what appears to me to be one of its first productions.

Jack,
We played Ticket to Ride last night and my 2 youngest kids (10 and 12) absolutely love this game. The great thing is that it's a game the adults enjoy also.
If you want ratings on games go to www.boardgamegeek.com and it will give you reviews written by the end users of the games plus how they rate each game. There is just about any game you can imagine there plus the information is great.
